I have a 10 1/2 yr old Brittany (man do I hate to see him age) he has the same problems with stiffness in his hips and back legs. We give him Rimadyl that was prescribed by our Vet and it's amazing how it helps him.
Good luck

How long have you guys been giving your dog Rimadyl? A year? 2? 4?
Thelma only got it for 2 weeks before they took her off.

I've kept an open prescription for about 1.5 years now. I only give it to my dog when he has a flair up. He gets his blood tested to check liver function 3 times a year. No problems.

This a 13 year old GSD. Main thing is to keep him comfortable and happy.

I'm going through this right now with my nearly 11 year old lab. He fell Christmas Eve day while I was giving him a bath and he's not been 100% since. After some x-rays, the vet said he had some arthritis in his hip/back and it was affecting his spinal column. She prescribed some Deramax for when he's stiff but said that he should lose weight. He was about 90 lbs then and as of last Saturday he's at 80 lbs. He's been on fish oil pills (1000 mg per day) and some super concentrate canine glucosamine (ENP Concentrate). I try to walk him every day for at least 30 minutes - this has made a huge difference. You can really see him stiffen up if I don't walk him. He's made huge strides and I only have to give him a Deramax maybe once per week.

I have to remind myself that he's virtually 77 (in dog years) and so he's not doing so bad.
