Default radar detector

I have a friend - (honestly not me) that bought a new car and is racking up tickets in Detroit. What should he buy? And why? Does anything warn against laser?

Thanks!

I had an Escort for many years that worked well. They also have laser detectors built in now. I think K-40 makes built ins. Had them in an Audi (fully hidden) and two in a pair of Aston Martin's

If I was going to buy one I'd go back to the Escort.

An intelligent person is one that can figure out after a few speeding tickets that he should slow down and watch his speed.

Another vote for Valentine. FWIW, if he keeps his speed less than 10 MPH over the limit, they hardly will look twice. Does he honestly need to go that fast?
And no, I am not a Democrat.....just ask my ex......she voted for O.

x3 or whatever....Valentine 1 with remote. Have had one for 6 years.

The laser is tough. It will detect it, but its too late by then.

OK, I drive fast, aggressively and I speed. But I don't get tickets.

I own and use a Valentine 1. I like it the best because it points out the direction of the radar which is very handy. But the game has changed a lot with instant on and Laser. The best detector in the world is only good for one thing with laser. It will give you a few more seconds to make up a good story. Laser is extremely directional and does not have enough random over scatter to let the detector pick it up - unless it has already picked you up.

Stuff on the headlights? I, for one, am not a believer. Since Laser measures the shift in frequency, the units are smart enough to ignore constant frequency sources.

Instant on is tough to fight. If there is enough traffic that the officer powers the unit up often enough, a good detector will pick it up and you'll see the signal come on and drop off very quickly. But if you are blasting through the country and the only car around, you are toast if he is lying in wait.

The good news is that most detectors will temper the person's driving somewhat because they do increase your awareness of how much the various agencies would like to fund their activities with your wallet. That sounds harsh, but if they can't spend the time to investigate a home burglary where it has cost you money, but they can pay somebody to sit at the side of the road where they can collect money, you quickly realize that safety is a revenue driven program.

Escort higher end units 9500I is great as well as Valentine 1. But there is not anything that works 100% against instant on or Laser. I would guess he is getting caught by laser and it is hard to detect. I would suggest he look at the Escort.com and see what he likes, A laser shifter does work but if you are 15 over there is just little that can be done. The Radar units that is in use today could be a low power KA frequency and is almost impossible to detect. I use the escort laser shifter as well as the 9500I and have had very good luck. BUT 93 mph against a laser and guess what you will be doing. Need to learn good BS skills it helps.

I have the Passport Solo and like it for the most part but I did however receive a ticket (Laser). I don't want to say how fast I was going but did receive a ticket in a 55 zone for 70 MPH. The popo was pissed and yes I was in an M3.

I have heard from friends that the Valentine is a good unit.
