Default tv types

My tv , a plasma model died and I am looking to get a new one, trouble is I don't know what type I want. On the boat we have a 15" LCD and that works great for the small area we have it in. But at home the old 42" was great and was a good size and nice picture. So is there a bette tv LCD or Plasma for the home in the liveing room? I just don't know which way to go. Anyone know the best one to get?

I have a 42" Samsung LCD in my room and I have no complaints about it.
Very bright picture and great contrast. I've had it for over a year.

What is wrong with the Plasma and how id it "die". Any chance of repairs?

I don't know where this is going, but didn't California just ban plasma tv’s because they are huge energy hogs? It might be something to consider before you lay down the green?

Vizio has made quite a name with their lcds. I have a 37" at home and has been great.
They just released an extremely thin panel lcd that should be a great application for boaters.
Plasma are energy pigs and will eventually wither away, they also are famous for burning pixels into the screen.

Vizio are readily available at bjs costco and walmart...i feel they are the best bang for the buck.

I just was at CES (the huge Consumer Electronics trade show in Vegas). The state of the art are the new LCD screens that are LED lit. Sharp, LG, Samsung all showed some spectacular sets. If you could wait, which it sounds like you can't , the new 3D capable sets will be out in the back half of the year. .. literally breath taking. Panasonic is about the last plasma hold out, and their sets are very nice as well. I watched parts of Avatar on one of their 3D plasmas and it was better than the theater.

That being said, we just picked up a 26" Vizio for a secondary purpose and it is just fine.

If you like I can publish my notes on TV and screen technology here, it's a little long.

I loved my Visio untill one of my kids whacked it ,with what I don't know. put a 1 inch by 12 inch line down the screen. you couldn't watch it.very annoying. So, I know it wasn't Visio's fault,But I emailed them a couple times asking if there was anything I could do. No response at all. If your thinking you might want something with a little customer service behind them I'd look elsewhere. I now have a sony Bravia LCD. very happy so far. The Visio was just over 3 months old, days out of costco's warranty. I may not have brought it back anyway.Nice way to toss a thousand bucks out the window.

Samsung 40 in LCD is great.

The plasmas are good too if you don't have light issues in the room - the very shiney glasslike screens tend to reflect light from a room with bright windows, etc.

I have seen Vizio and Sony sets that almost as good!

The picture quality of the plasma is usually a bit better ,but once it dies is done ,the lcd will give you more longevity .I have both kinds and like my plasma picture better. There is newer led technology but is somewhat new.

Danny, having just seen every TV on the market in one place, literally thousands of them, that just isn't true anymore. I would have agreed with you for the most part two years ago, but not today. Not to say the Panasonics and the late lamented Pioneer Kuro aren't great TVs, but they are not "better".

He could buy it now and if they ban them so what? You think they are going to tell everybody that has one they have to give it up? Yeah, Cali is gonna have the TV police go to everybodies door and take their Plasma tv's:rof l:. Damn environmental wackos. Cause more harm than good everytime.

LCD backlit by LED's would be prefered, old style flourescent backlit would be 2nd choice if cost matters.
