Default to tow or not to tow (with high mileage odyssey)

The high IQ of dockside is required.
-02 Odyssey, 125k, new tranny at 20k+/-, factory towing package/tranny cooler (3500# rating).
-tow will be a u-haul trailer, 3000#+/-, 650 miles x 4 trips.

does dosckside just go for it & hope for the best, or go and buy a sweet low mileage Tahoe? I would like to keep the van for 200k++ miles, but I think this just may kill it... I dunno?

Van is worth 5k for trade now... dead tranny - not worth squat.

Go for it. Just take it easy accelerating and you don't have to go wide open the whole way. My truck has a 350 in it with 200,000 miles and I pull whatever.

I am on my second, over 90k on the unit. It was acting up 15k ago, shuttering, shifting poorly, burnt oil smell. Took it to the shop, had the oil changed/pan cleaned, shop guy said give her a try, but I think she will blow soon. That was 15k ago... all has been well since.

Honda trannys really suck that bad? I would have thought Hondas were a little more substantial than that. Have you given any thought to just renting a uhaul box truck? I would think that would eliminate a trip, or does it have to be more than on trip for some reason?

I paid for the first Honda Tranny when I bought the minivan, Honda has paid for the other 4.

Doesn't give you a warm and fuzzy when you take off on a trip.

All the other weight in he truck--people, gear, counts against the tow limit. Flat towing at reasonable speed will be marginal but probably OK.

There must have been a big change between the 04 and 05 models because I notice lots of people selling rebuilt 04 and earlier trannys, but I don't see any 05 and newer listed other than used ones and those are going for a song. That usually would mean the 05's and later are not breaking - does anyone know if the service history is better on the 05's and up?
