If you don't want to kill it, try this. If you get a chance to get close to it, just tap it a few times with a stick till it "plays possum". Then you can pick it up by the tail, watch out for the fleas, and put it in something to haul it off.
A good way to catch them besides the have a heart type trap is to put a dead chicken in an open top drum. Lean a branch against the drum for the possums to climb. They'll climb up, jump in to get the chicken, and then they can't get out. It's almost like shooting fish in a barrel.

Well I'm alive and back from the depths of hell. What I ended up doing was putting on a pair of welding gloves and ventured in. I heard a bunch of clanging going on, but saw nothing......I think she's hiding under my snowblower attachment? Either way I didn't have to do battle mono on mono, so I grabbed my trap and left.......I should go snap off a pic of my trap setup. I'll be right back.

Yah I really do need to get in there and do some chopping. That job is on my "B" list. And yes that stuff is wild grape.

I'm not a fan of killing animals needlessly, but I'd probably shoo it out of the shed. We actually raised some baby 'possums when I was a kid. Found a mother dead with babies in her pouch. Hand fed 'em. I think 3-4 survived and were either released or taken to a wildlife center that later released them.

Here's my live trap setup.

If she doesn't want to come out today I know full well she'll want to come out tonight......this is her only way out.

Shoot it sooner than later. Then put the whole thing in a meat grinder mix it with some peanut butter and use it for catfish bait.

Here's the full extent of my wild grape vine. Most of it I will keep, it hides the chain link fence the previous owners put up to keep their dogs in.

Any true cajun knows that a possum is a flat animal that sleeps in the road!!!!

That's one that most cajuns won't attempt to eat. We have used the "have-a-heart" type traps for them with success. When one is caught we call the animal control folks. They come out, throw a tarp over the cage, pick it up and put it in the truck. They claim it won't spray as long as it is under the tarp. I'll have to take their word for that.

In the pic below (sorry that’s the best pic I could take because I was all zoomed out) she is pulling apart a weed pill that is in it’s first stage of going to compost. She didn’t appear to be looking for food, she appeared to be sorting it out and spreading it about for possibly bedding??? This went on for about 15 minutes. Just to the left of her she could drag the straw type material under the pile of logs I have there and have a nice little shelter. But no, she turns around and walks inside my garden shed.....as far as I know she hasn’t come out yet.

My first reaction was to get the bow out and shoot it, but as it turns out she gets a bye she’s pregnant. So do I want her hanging around? I know full well she can’t live in my garden shed with her babies. Will she have her babies in my garden shed and then move them to a place that is nice and comfy? How long do the babies hang around for? If she and babies do live in my garden shed, how destructive are they and how much do they stink?

She has babies. Please do not trap, frighten, or otherwise bother her. If you want her to go away, just leave the shed door open until she is gone with all her babies. If you disturb them that might cause her babies to be separated from her.

Completely nondestructive.

Not at all if they are not frightened.

I don't know exactly how the babies became a fact. He said the possum was fat. It might even be a male for all we know. I have an idea. Catch it in a harmless trap, bathe it, feed it gourmet meals, dress it in designer clothes, and put it on a plane special delivery to surfer girl. That way it won't be able to not be destructive at your house.

I understand they can be a nuisance and destructive.... but something about a pregnant animal just tugs at my heart strings and says DON'T KILL HER!! I hope the Have a heart trap works and she's able to be relocated.

Don't blast me.... if there was an animal in my backyard that could hurt my dog I'd surely kill it... but it would be hard for me to do. So far I've only had to kill a few snakes...and I did feel bad as the shovel was whacking off their heads

A few weeks ago when the squirrels (read tree rats) had really gotten to me, eating all the food meant for our birds, I got out the hav-a-hart trap. In less than a week, I had caught and relocated 19 of them. Twice, I caught two at once...They are not very bright. I have taken them about 3 miles down the road to a nice glade now called "squirrel hollow" for obvious reasons...

I tried setting it at night with one frozen shrimp for bait too, and during that time, I caught and transported 5 raccoons... Have not seen any opossums....

A neighbor told me I'd better check with Fish and Game so I did by anoymous e-mail and was told that while I cannot relocate them, I can shoot them or otherwise dispatch them. I think I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing...
