Good for you!

What's a chicken tractor?

Most I ever got at one time was 300. Mostly if I bought locally I got 25, mail order 50 - 100.

A chicken tractor is really just a portable coop so they can scratch around in the grass, I don't want to let them run free due to the dogs, foxes and coons around here. It's 2 feet tall and 6x10 with an open bottom, I've got 2 of them. Here is a pic of one, mine are not so pretty

Are they taking a shower before they go out? Congrats on your new endeavor. Keep us apprised on how it goes.

I don't know how you guys can do it. I could never kill an animal (unless my life depended on it) even for food. Don't get me wrong....I'm no vegeterian, I love steak, chicken, pork, lamb chops, ect.... But I don't have the heart to kill them. I look at it as well.....they are already dead so why waste it.

I even feel bad when I'm slinging Mahi in my fish box. Sorry.....don't take away my man card please. LOL

Shucks!!!!!!

I've had a calf named "deep freezer".

Pig named "spare rib".

Raised rabbits, at any one time I might kill between 20 to 40 in a single day. Don't get me wrong, not one bit of blood thirst in me, quick, clean and as painless as possible. But you know you pull 19 bunnies out of a cage and they don't come back, bunny number 20 got to have atleast an inkling of an idea of what's comming. By the way I did not whack'em in the back of the head, that is by no means a sure thing.

Chickens quite a few at a time. Best way to do them, use an onion sack, cut one corner out, put the chicken in the sack, let him stick his head out of the corner, wrap him snug in the sack, cut his head off with a large sharp knife at the first vertibra. The sack will keep him from thrashing around, spraying blood every where, or bruising the meat of the bird.

Sid

One side note-----

Feed them a feed as high in protien as you can buy. Keep'em on starter/grower, plus a supplement of Carnation Calf Manna. Well it has been 15 years since I grew out broilers, I guess Carnation Calf Manna is still available. Nearest I can remember Calf Mana is/was about 25 - 30% protien.

Birds that you buy have been fed "Lord only knows" what, but you can garauntee it is way higher in protien, hormones and medications than anything you can buy.

The only time I grew broilers with growth that even came close to commercial results, was when I made friends with a chicken grower in Livingston Parish. He raised birds for Sanderson farms several hundreds of thousand at a time. Near the end of the 6 week growing cycle the birds would be eating several semi trailer loads of feed PER DAY. He allowed me to borrow some of his feed 100# at a time, don't know what was in it, but those were the fattest birds I ever fed out.

I feed my chicks straight cracked corn after a short period of grower... takes 9 weeks, but they end up at about 4-5 lbs. after that... good size, and I know what goes into them..

Tommy docked you two weeks with no man card for the first comment. I have to dock you an additional two weeks for the "docile and graceful" comment, and put you on probation for six months, Scrabble. Try to watch it, will ya?

Fine looking little chickens, there, Sid. Should be tasty before you know it. Will you be pulling the heads off at butcher time, or drowning them in water like the French prefer? (that parts for scarabchris lol)
