Default SCAM - Selling speakers out of a van

Today was the 3rd time I was hit up for this scam. After politely telling the guy that I was not interested, he kept pushing and I finally told him to F off and I that I knew about the scam. The guy actually sounded shocked. I only wish that I wasn't so angry so I could have really told him off.

For those of you that have not had the pleasure, typically 2 guys in a white van troll around parking lots looking for guys that might be interested in buying some "high quality" speakers that they just happen to have leftover from an installation job they were doing. When you get home you find out that they are infact very low quality speakers or in some cases a box of rock....

That's been going on for years, they target late teens to early 20's group usually in mall parking lots. One time I scammed them back! They were offering a pair of mini speakers for $20 and I handed him one of those fake joke $20 bills.Folded in half they look real ! He grabbed it and gave me the speakers! I even waited to leave for a minute or two to see if they noticed. By then they were long gone! BTW those mini speakers were cheap but they did work ok. I used them for a police scanner.

Gypsies...used to see them in the same van or vehicle selling or offering something different on different days...one day it's the speakers (pure crap), another day is offering to repair the dents on your vehicle...sometimes they show up at your house wnating to paint, roof, or whatever...

The "Gypsies" have been doing that sort of scam work for years, good economy or bad. Don't think it's because people are out of work that they pull scams.

Not this again. There's another thread on here about this. They are junk speakers.

Well about 20 years ago I got hit with the same scame except they said the company loaded two pairs in the van. Not sure what I paid for them but when I got home I could tell they were cheap. I taped the box back up and sold them for just a little more in the trading post.

BTW before you buy speakers- get your favorite CD and listen!!! I went through lots of them but endup with re-tuned KEF Ref4, they sound better than 25k Pups and in line with B&W. DynaAudio would be my 2nd choice. Your Amp has lots do do with sound- tubes great for mids, solid state- best for base.... I like no color... No BS...Just my 2.

Here in Savannah, we have a group put on a giant name brand liquidation at the National Guard Armory. I went one time to see what it was all about, they charged a five dollar cover just to get in the door. The five bucks was well worth it, it was some of the funniest crap I have ever seen, people buying stuff left and right thinking they were getting top notch stuff. Name brand products like Fockford Rosgate, Bioneer, Bos, Alfpine, and Pony. The badging was identical and I guess people did not recognize the names being slightly off.

I would like to know if there is anybody around here that thinks that two guys selling "leftovers" out of the back of the van could possibly not be a scam.

Price must have gone down because I was approached about a month ago in a mall parking lot by 2 white guys in a mini-van who offered me a FREE surround sound system. The guy said You have a big truck it'll fit right in. Told him No Thanks.

Rule #1: Nothing is free.

I figured they'd try to roll me and steal my ride and I really didn't wanna hurt them so I drove away.

They do this nationwide, moving from town to town. A couple years ago, I worked doing routine maintenance at convenience stores. I saw the same 3 guys in the same van, giving the same line about not wanting to get in trouble with the boss, because they over bid the job, and just had to get rid of these speakers. I saw them over a one week period, once in Illinois, again in Iowa, and finally in Wisconsin. All 3 times they made me the offer. Each time, they were over 100 miles from the last place I'd seen them. Funny, because each time, they didn't recognize me from before, and tried the exact same pitch each time. The 3rd time, I interrupted and continued their speech for them. They just looked dumbfounded, and drove away.
