Default Do Reality tv people get paid

Just curious I see a lot of "common" people on these reality tv shows like American Idol, I Wanna go Fishing and etc.

I know the shows make money and that is the main reason they exist but do the people on the shows get any kind of pay at all, I have done a couple of tax returns over the years where people had very minor parts in movies and they were paid pretty well for what they did.

By the way anyone catch the first two episodes of I Wanna Go Fishing, looks like the young man from San Diego really had a ball in Alaska, I bet he was one of the first to surf in AK

They are paid a flat fee and expenses including air travel. They are not union members.

I don't know about the others, but American Idol has an extensive contract which every contestant has to sign. The higher up they get, the longer the contract paperwork is.

The production company pretty much owns them for quite a few years. Well, at least owns their income for that time...

That is why they continue to promote their past headliners. They still make their money.

I've dabbled into a few movie and TV shows myself and yes, they do make a pretty penny for little work (speaking parts). Plus the residual money continues on well past the initial pay (SAG folks, not the "extra's").

Every time you see a movie replayed, another chunk of money goes to the actors.

If memory serves me right, the kid that played the boy that was eaten by the shark on JAWS was initially paid less than $2,000 for his filming work, but to date has been paid over $60,000 thanks to the residuals. JAWS seems to replay weekly.

A personal friend of mine is a well known character actor on both TV and the big screen and has been for many years. His appearances have slowed down lately, but he still makes a VERY nice income due to the residuals.

Also, the folks on Dancing with the Stars get paid a flat fee of $125K to start, and then another fee for each week that they remain on the show.

My brother, who is a contractor, was hired by a home DIY type show which was local to us in the Bay Area and he put in a week's worth of work and was paid $5,000. He wasn't the "star" of it (a family owned the house), but he was the one that ran around acting all stressed out over issues and delays with the project (which of course are mostly made up to add drama to the show). The show was not one of the biggie's that you see on network TV. It was broadcasted on cable though.

I'll have to check out the fishing show that you mentioned. Sounds interesting.

Simon Cawl of Idol was the largest contract writer for a british record company he has more gold records to his name than any artist if you bracket the search to include who signed the artist to the contract.

little tid bite, also if you watch enough of the BS day time reality shows you will see actors and actress on dating shows and also on Big Brother ect...

Do not ask how I know...lol...
