Default Jury Awards $8.6 Million

This is better than winning the lottery, but with pain.

Jury Awards $8.6 Million to Man Paralyzed After Crashing Into Wild Pigs

A motorcyclist who was paralyzed when he struck six wild pigs on a California state highway in 2003 has been awarded $8.6 million by a Monterey County jury.

Adam Rogers, 45, sued the California state Department of Transportation, charging that officials knew that wild pigs regularly crossed a section of Highway 1 just south of the Carmel River to feed at a nearby environmental restoration project. Despite knowing that the pigs were creating a hazard, officials did nothing to address the issue, he asserted. ...

I doubt there will be an appeal. It was not an act of god (weather), it was an act of the state. I think the state will just give the guy his I.O.U.

His blood alc level made him legally drunk at the time (0.10 with 0.08 drunk), but the jury found his intoxication had nothing to do with his injuries.

The state lost because where the accident happened, there were no pigs. Then the state created a natural habitat restoration project on the other side of the road. That caused the pigs to come. The pigs created a problem, started crossing the road to get to the new habitat area, local folks complained. The state did nothing to address the problem they created, that same problem lead to the accident.

Fwiw, pigs are not indigenous to California. Hell, they are not indigenous to the US.
