Default My Son made me sooo proud yesterday !

My son, Derrick, who is 6 started lacrosse this week. Yesterday was his 2nd practice and about halfway thru the coach had them do a drill where the kids formed 2 parallel lines. He would toss the ball out into the field and 2 kids would run out, scoop the ball, run about 20' and shoot at the goal. Derrick "smoked" his 1st 2 opponents so the coach put a bigger and more talented kid up against him and Derrick got "schooled" and he knew it.
What made me so proud was that as they were jogging back to the line, Derrick patted the other more experienced kid on his back and said "Good job, man."

Good Sportsmanship starts at an early age and is a TAUGHT behavior.

You got that right! There are couple kids who when standing in line, they start hitting each other with the sticks, CONSTANTLY. Drives me nuts. AND their parents don't even say anything. They were one coach short on the first day so he had his hands full. On the first day, it clearly got on Derricks nerves too and he turned around to the 2 kids that were goofing off and yelled "Hey! Knock it off! "

They did!

Hahaha! I coach Lax...started with 1st/2nd grade and while half the kids liked it, wanted to be there, and were a joy to coach, the other half were a bunch of brats who would just sword fight with their sitcks, never pay attention and need to be told 10 times what to do b/c they were too busy goofing around. Moved up to 3rd/4th grade and it wasnt much different. Had 5th graders last year and had a great group of kidswho, although most not very talented and we lost most of the games, were willing to work hard and learn the skills and game. Not coaching this year but will get back involved when my 5 yr old starts playing. My wife runs the 1st/2nd grade girls program (my 8 and 7 yr old play) and has pretty much the same experience - including a lot more 'suggestions' from the parents.

Sounds like Derrick is one of those "6-going-on-30" types.

Lax is a great sport; teaches the true meaning of teamwork and good sportsmanship. Hope he "sticks" with it ~ pun intended.

Ahhhhh.... Kent Island! Is the Red Eye Dock Bar still a hopping joint?
