Default Starbucks, what is with everyone's obsession

I drive by one every morning, and there is a line out into the road. Their coffee is decent, but it is easy enough to find (or brew) coffee that is just as good, if not better, for way less money. I just don't get it, who would have ever thunk folks would line up like crack junkies for a $5 cup of joe.

Where my business is,we have a few Dunkin Donuts in very close proxity to each other and they really suck. We have commercial property on a very busy street,so we contacted Starbucks and offered to build a small strip mall and would build to suit ,they declined. Not sure why ,maybe because of all the D&D's.

We are still tinkering with the idea of a gourmet coffee shop,if I do it I would just run it myself. frig 'em...

Starbucks has developed more of a brand recognition than a great cup of coffee. The starbucks logo is associated with upper and upper-middle class people on the go.

Lots of people have bought into their brand concept.

Starbucks has developed more of a brand recognition than a great cup of coffee.

Starbucks produces a decent cup of coffee, and the quality is consistent. It is the standard against which we judge all other coffee; e.g. it is better than Starbucks, or worse than Starbucks, but it is always compared to Starbucks.

Same goes for McDonald's french fries, they are the standard against which we judge all other french fries.

My uncle was roomates in college with Howard Shultz. He aked him to join in the business, but he was headed to Nasa so declined. I am not sure if he regrets it now, but it would be nice to get free coffee.

My thoughts as well. Its "trendy" to drink Starbucks and to be seen at Starbucks. Just like the friggin huge sunglasses from the 70s. Why does everyone want to look like a fly?

My guess is that the big sun glasses will fade out like most trends do, Starbucks will stick around because there will always be coffee drinkers.

BTW....I have never had anything from Starbucks. In fact I was only in a Starbucks once while my wife was getting some stupid fancy cold coffee...yuk.

I guess you guys didn't partake in the coffe machine thread?

Guy asked for decent coffee maker, got all kinds of answers, press brewers, bungs, italiaanno, french expresso, ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong.

Starbucks never! Dunkin Doughnuts never we ain't got one! When traveling I bring my own Community Dark roast, pot and filters. Restaurant coffe I drink only in the morning when nothing else is available. But I don't like it!

Me I would pay anything for one small demi of my MawMaw's coffee. She used nothing but Community dark roast, brewed in a tall blue enamel ware drip pot with the sock thing in the top. She would bring the water to boil in a kettle, then stand there and stoke the dripper. The smell gee I'd give anything for just one wiff of MawMaw's coffe. If you were a child (under 12) you got coffe milk, condensed milk, coffe, and sugar. If you were a "grown up" you got to fix your very own cup. I relished the day when I was invited to the table to sit and fix my cup.

MawMaw died in '83, the one thing I wanted, well actually it was a few things, one being that coffe pot. Goodness only knows how old it was. As fate would have it, my older sister who picked her momento first because she was older picked the pot. I got the pot that my MawMaw cooked chicken stew in, which was a very good substitute for the coffee pot. The one thing I am fully aware of, is even if I had MawMaw's pot, no way I could make the coffee.

The point I am trying to make. The best things are usually free, like MawMaw's coffee. By the way I bet she ain't paid $5 for that old time drip pot.

They brew good coffee. I am not into the foamy drinks, cold drinks, etc, but compared to DD, 7-11, wa wa, the exxon, etc... Starbucks coffee is WAAAAAY better.

This really only matters if you drink it black. If you are doctoring it up with sugar and milk, any garbage will do.
