Default 2009 Honda Civic - still good?

Thinking about buying the daughter a Civic...

Any comments? Still happy with yours?

Any specifics about the 3 trim levels: DX, LX, EX?

Glen, The Civic is a great car. However the new Ford Focus has a lot of great options that young people seem to appreciate such that the Sync option that works with cell phones and media players. The Focus has had very little problems. Just a suggestion that might be worth looking at. Ford has employee pricing right now also.

The Honda is still a excellent choice.

My girlfriend has a 06 which is the same as the 09. I really can't think of anything bad to say about it. I have a '96 as a daily driver with 150k on it and would not hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow.

Thanks for the idea on the Focus and I agree but my best friend owns the local Honda dealer so that's the way we have to go for "true" dealer cost reasons...

I had a 2008 4-door Si....great little car, but it just wasn't practial for my work. I traded it in for my Maxima....got the same amount on trade allowance that I paid for it. If I were in the market for something like it again, it would be #1 on my short list.

Edited to add:
The trim level on the Si was the same as a standard EX 4-door, only with a 6-speed manual. Great stereo and nav system. The only beef I had was that you could not get an in-dash CD changer with the nav....but you could put one in the trunk. Very comfortable car considering the size...plenty of room for 2-6' guys in the back seat.

If she plans to drive it if and when she heads off to college look at warranties...

Honda offers a basic 3/36 and a 5/60 for powertrain..

We went through the same deal recently with our daughter and opted for a Saturn because it had a few better options in our opinion.

One important issue what does she want?

I would suggest a EX given the level of equipment.

16 inch alum wheels is standard

I would also look at a Jeta

A Accord might be worth a look since you are getting it at cost.

It is a great car. I would go with the LX trim level.

I went through the same decision in the Summer and I bought the Toyota Matrix instead to have the hatchback, but the Civic was a close choice #2. It gets slightly better gas mileage and had a better transmission but no split back seat (the entire seat folded down, at least in the 2008 model).

The problem with the Civic is that it always seems to be either a "starter car" or it is owned by rabid hippies who are obsessed with getting 50 mpg, or whatever it is a civic gets. Clearly they have come a long way over the last few years and have gotten a lot nicer, but have you thought about the accord or cr-v ? Either seems like it would hold its usefulness much longer.

IMO in the high school/college/first job timeframe, a small or midsize SUV has a lot going for it.

I don't think the Civic comes with Stability control but the Acord does http://automobiles.honda.com/accord-...px?feature=vsa.

If it was my daughter I would only get her a car with Stability control.

Excellent choice, Glen. While the other makes may offer some niceties and longer warranties, historically the Civic will have the best resale downstream. Ford and Saturn make decent cars, but the warranty is not worth much if the company is gone............

I sure hope so. I just bought Ford's 7 year extended warranty for my 2006 F250.

Good choice. I've had several Civics over the years, and they all were darn near perfect cars.
