Default Winter Weather '08/'09, will it be a rough one?

Usually at this time of year I hear all these opinions on how bad the weather/wintery stuff will be. What are your predictions? Overall, I think it's starting out to be a cold one here in the Mid-Atlantic. I'll play the snowy card this year..... ;?

Who knows? The national weather service can't even tell us fisherpeople, with any degree of acuracy, what the wind conditions will be tomorrow or the next day,.so how could they predict how snowy the winter will be?

I hope it snows more than last year, new skis are getting their first workout this weekend.

It's going to be warm with all the global warming. Just yesterday,it was as warm as 14* F where I live. ;?

I predict it's going to be like the previous 35 winters I have lived through, some cold days, some mild.

My father will tell you when they were kids ,walking to school, walk home for lunch, back to school, then home again,in 5 feet of snow,up hill all ways.

Getting our share in northern Michigan, lot's of snow and cold, our local ski area opened on Nov. 22, been out 9 times now, its been great even though we only have hills and not mtns. 60" of base and more falling everyday.

I'm generally pretty accurate with calling the winters, but since moving out to the country all my usual tell tale signs seem to be displaced. But, "if" we get as much precipitation this winter as we did this past fall and summer then we'll be shoulder deep in snow. But I don't see it being a particularly cold winter up here. Therefore even "if" we do get a good dumping of snow a mild spell and rains will quickly follow and knock that volume down to basically nothing. Snowmobilers this year I think they'll be lucky to get 2 weeks of half decent sledding in in these parts.

Now in saying that, since I don't see it to be an over cold winter, therefore the Great Lakes won't freeze over "solid", therefore regions south, west or south/ west of the great waters should take some Serious snow falls and Bitter cold winds. The fetch effects across open water in the winter always plays havoc on places like Buffalo.

edit: .........or places like Harbor Springs Mi.

Last year this time we were just starting to get below 60s. But this year we had our first snow in october. Im voting a very cold winter for us. funny thing is its 65 out now. and will be 71 tommarrow, but will be 38 on thursday. But last thanksgiving was 80 degrees and I took the dogs to the beach. This thanksgiving was 35 and I had the heat cranked up.

I'm thinking that with all the rain we had here all summer it's time for a dry spell. Great timing for me to buy another snowmobile.

NC looking pretty darn cold. Except for today and tomorrow, it has pretty much been 10 degrees below normal for the past month, and much colder than it was this time last year. Wetter too, I may see my first real snowfall on Raleigh (as in over 2" and lasting past 10:00 am). Someone was saying El Nino had kept it warm the past few years and now that it has ended winter will be back.

We are starting into a cooling trend This means that we will have more wind because of greater differences in land/sea temps

I was just checking the weather on Noaa.gov and they had a blurb aboutNovember being above average temperature...........to which I say BS!!. Today it's about 22-25* and the sun is out for only the third or fourth day in the last 5 weeks. We had no snow on the ground for opening day of firearm deer season (Nov15th) and then on the 16th it started. It has snowed almost every day since. This past weekend we got about 12" in one storm. Not lake effect just a little ol' system type storm. We have more snow on the ground for this time of year than I can recall. Maybe 78 and 82 were like this and it was bad all winter those years. I ran into a logger I know in the local hardware on Monday. He's felling grade timber on the Leelanau pennisula and he said the snow is right up to his crotch out in the woods there. I saw deer tracks out in the field that had skid marks from their bellies dragging through the snow. Going to be darn tough on the critters if we don't get a break. High water in the rivers when it melts will get the steelhead moving though. Guess there's a positive in any situation if you look for it.

Here in Central Florida, it has been a cool cold start to winter, I do not think it has been to freezing in my area, but very close. Ocala had some freezing temps, and I live close to there. I have seen it a lot colder here, actually during one of the great freezes in the 80's I saw it 10 above zero and another time I saw Ice freezing on side walks in Epcot on Christmas day, made the tourist happy since they did not bring much winter clothes.
In my years here in Florida it seems if we have a cold fall and early winter, it will be a warm spring and vise verse.
