GMILL - I actually have the # to my local office and I have the mobile # of one of the managers I've had to use it a couple of times too! The 800 # is a joke!

Thundra - When I decide to nix cable all together (other than internet) I will continue with Netflix and probably use it more than I currently do. At least with Netflix I can watch what I want and when I want.

Dish does not provide local channels in HD. DirectTV does.
Beg to differ... I get the local channels on Dish in both standard and HD, and the HD images blow the standard ones away.

Alrighty then...I guess I'm not alone.

I have never heard fo Verizon Fios or ATT Uverse so I guess they are not in the area yet.

You know......if scumcast could just keep the signal strong so I don't lose cable and internet every day I would be happy. The picture is great (when it works) the on demand is nice (when it works) and the internet is very fast (when it works).

So check this out. I guess the squeaky wheel gets the oil. There was a friggin crew of Comcast linemen working on my neighborhood today. I saw at least 4 bucket trucks working on 4 different poles, including the one accross the street where my cable hooks up.

I'll wait a week or two before I dump them for a dish service. I would rather have working cable instead of dish. When its raining on the weekends I loke to lay on the couch and watch movies. The dish sucks in the rain.

I have Comcast too, as I live in an apartment and do not have a clear signal for DirectTV. I was paying about $66 for first 6 months for cable (basic 70 channels or whatever) and internet. Then after 6 months, it went up to $100. I paid it for one month then called and asked to speak to a "customer retention specialist". I told them I love Comcast but I am thinking of swithcing to DirectTV because of there $44 special (or whatever the hell it is) that gives a lot of channels. But before I switch to DirectTV, I wanted to see if Comcast can match it.

A few minutes later, I had the Digital Plus package (channel 1- about 190) plus Encore, all the HBOs and other movie channels for the same $50/month. If I want HD, its about an extra $7/month. So for $50 I am getting a lot more channels. The customer retention specialist get in trouble if too many people drop service, so they do what they can to keep you.

You guys should try it out, try to get as much as possible from them, but remain friendly and not too pushy.

That's an interesting one - if you have zero obstructions then in my experience DirecTV was actually more reliable than comcast. I could keep my signal in all but the absolute worst south florida rainstorms - and even then it was usually only out for a few seconds at a time. I installed the dish myself and went to some trouble to keep it secure and get the best signal I could. Unfortunately, you still have to do something for internet - which means you're either paying for DSL which is stupid when you don't have a home phone, or you're still relying on comcast for that.

I actually went for 3 years with comcast where every "winter" as soon as the temps dropped below 60 degrees my cable would crap out. Every year they would send someone out who would inevitably crimp new ends on the cable and the problem would go away for a year. Finally they replaced my line and so far so good.

As bstn pointed out, you can call comcast and threaten to leave (ask for retention department) and they'll put you on a "promotional" plan for 6 or 12 months. I believe you have to go 6 months not on any plan, and then you can call back and threaten to leave again and they'll put you on another promo plan.

Another update. The cable has been perfect sinse the crew was in the neighborhood. The internet is faster too. On top of that the corperate exec I was emailing is giving me a 6 month promotional rate on my monthly bill. My bill is about $160.00 per month. It will noe be $60.00 per month....depending on if I order any PPV.

Flot....I would rather have cable because of the rain fade with the dish. I have had the dish before and that rain fade drives me nuts. And I'm always watching when its raining out. What else is there to do?
