Default I l,ove drugs............

well, prescription drugs anyway. At 1:30 today I decided to jump off the marina forklift and did a really bad job guessing the distance to the ground. Instead of a 3 ft fall it was closer to 5ft. I came down on my heels......the left one first. I am now inclined in a condo at the beach with my foot elevated above my heart since I fractured by heel bone...multiple fractures. I have experienced broken arms (both at the same time), my hip, ribs, toes, fingers and even split my skull twice ....... those breaks didn't' hurt like this fork up. I sure hope this hydrocodone kicks in fast.

I may pass out soon but will return tomorrow. Has anyone here broken their heel? Advice, suggestions or things to consider will be appreciated. The task I now have is figuring out how to get back to ATL to see my orthopedic surgeon.... my wife will probably fly down to get my sorry azz home.

Looks like its crutches for you son.
Don't fall in love w/ the hydrocodone----its goooood stuff! Ripped my Achillies a couple of years ago, and was flying around feeling happy for 6 months.

Ouch. That hurts just thinking about it. No insight on the broken heal, but definitely get to an ortho that you know and trust. Sounds like you have one on retainer. Quite the inventory of injuries, reads like Evil Knievel. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Hello Tireless,

Very sorry to hear about your heel.

In fact, a broken calcaneous (heel) may be a worrisome injury. Keep that visit with the orthopod, you may have some surgery ahead of you. The other thing about heel fractures is the time spent healing, and the time you have to spend off of them. Many require absolutely no weight bearing for a long time.

The heel has a significant tendon attaching to it (achilles) and this often create a pull and prevents proper union of the fracture site. (Hence pinning/screws)

Yes, it hurts like hell. You are best advised to not try to drive. By definition, you are an impaired driver. 1. Hydrocodone (Percodan would be better) 2. Pain (And it will get realy dicey with in below your heart for more than 10 min) 3. One legged driver. (braking/acceleration etc) Any knucklehead causes an accident, and your insurance company will be moonwalking away from you like Michael Jackson. It will be your fault even if you are parked.

Calcaneal fracture=sh!tty deal

Readum and weep..... cut/pasted from the emedicine site:

Goals of treatment

The use of nonoperative versus operative interventions for calcaneus fractures is a controversial topic. Treatment goals of operative modalities include the following: (1) restoration of heel height and length, (2) realignment of the posterior facet of the subtalar joint, and (3) restoration of the mechanical axis of the hindfoot.

Treatment guidelines

With these treatment goals in mind, current trends in orthopedics support the following treatment guidelines.19, 20

Extra-articular fractures are generally treated in a closed manner. Exceptions include fractures of the sustentaculum tali with displacement of more than 2 mm, posterior avulsion fractures, and significant fractures of the calcaneal body.

Intra-articular fractures may be treated in a closed fashion, but they are more commonly treated with a combination of open reduction, ostectomy, osteotomy, internal fixation, and/or arthrodesis of the subtalar and calcaneocuboid joints. Nondisplaced (Sanders type I) intra-articular fractures are generally treated closed. Severely comminuted (Sanders type IV) intra-articular fractures may be treated with a combination of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and arthrodesis of the subtalar joint.

Other factors influencing nonoperative versus operative intervention include the patient's age, comorbid health conditions, and any concurrent injuries.

Has anyone here broken their heel?
Yup. Summer of '88. Mine was thanks to a lousy mechanic who left an oil spill on the deck of my boat. I stepped in it but didn't realize it until I stepped out on the swim platform and slid off. Wouldn't have been bad if the boat had been in the water, but it was on a concrete floor in the shop, about the same height as yours - 5 feet. Landed square on my right heel. The ball of the heel was split into 3 pieces, and I spent a miserable stinking hot summer in a cast up to my knee for 10 weeks.

Only advice I can offer is to not expect a quick recovery, and be cautious with the Rxs. Doc had me on Percodan at first. Nasty stuff! After floating down from the stratosphere, I flushed the bottle after the third pill.

Also, much as I hate to tell you, you can fully expect to develop arthritis in that area.

Sorry you had to "join the club" and hope you find plenty of distractions to get you over it soon.

Thanks for the support guys. I am coming to the realization I am royally screwed with this injury. I never got a wink of sleep last night given the pain and the ineffective drugs. Went back to the ER today, new splint, new drugs....percocet I beliive. My wife jumped on a flight to SAV and drove me and my truck home as I lapsed in and out of consciousness in the middle seat. Going to see my ortho guy on Monday. Ouchie......the good news is the amzing collection of shades of purple on my feet and ankle.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I hope the pain goes away soon but I doubt it.... I will tell ya when I was in the throws of suffering at my worst from rheumatoid arthritis I know Maximum doses of Fish Oil and Loritabs helped to get me through the pain. I wish you all the best, take care

Sorry to hear about the injury.

My wife went through reconstructive surgery to her foot a few years ago and it was not fun at all.

Percocet has a couple of different strengths. I prefer the 10/325. I take two at a time. It helps.

I've also been given Oxycontin 10, but that doesn't do a thing for me.

Best of luck in your recovery!

First, jumping off a forklift is no accident. Why would you jump off a perfectly good forklift? They do go up and down. So why not ride it down and not jump? ;?

And what were you doing on a forklift to start with???

Sounds like from past experiences your better off landing on your head.

All B.S, aside when can you fish again???
Sound like you'll be the bean bag boy for awhile.

Yeow! I'm really sorry to hear this. Keep your chin up.

Like adave, I tore my achilles some years ago and the worst part of the deal was being crippled for 6 months. When you can't walk your mood can crash too, so be careful with the mood-altering stuff too (I never had a problem with the hydrocodone - it made me throw up.)

Keep us in the loop with your progress. Like the good doctor dssmith implies, these kind of injuries ain't for sissies!

Hey Mark. From what I have read I will be on crutches from 6 to 8 weeks. I think it's time to sell the go-fast and get a slower more comfortable ride.

Last night was great. woke up once to pee and pop another pill. I'll see the ortho on Monday and see what happens from there.

Aaaaaa cut the damn thing off and be done with it.
Let's just look at the benefits of hacking the thing off:
- your heel won't be sorry anymore
- you definitely won't have to worry about arthritis
- you'll never get a cold foot again
- you'll never have to worry about stink foot or cutting your nails
- you will be eligible in joining the Special Olympics
- you can use the handicap express lanes in the airports
and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the medical universities around the country wouldn't give you a few bucks for your foot.

See there is always a bright side to any bleak picture David. Speedy recovery my friend..........up your calcium intake, it certainly can't hurt.

[QUOTE]Well, good thing then that you are "Tireless". Sorry to hear this. And, Best wishes for a quick recovery. Vicodin was my favorite for my back injury. So, what WERE you doing on the forklift? Is there another good story to go with this?
