Default Laptop?

The collective wisdom here on THT seems to favor Lenovo laptop computers and I'd like to check them out.......seeing as how I've fixed the old Gateway for the last time.

Anyone have advice on where to get a good deal on one, new or refurb'd doesn't matter.

Go to www.bensbargains.net, search for "Lenovo" - www.lenovo.com has great deals sometimes, you just have to catch the right one.

Lenovos are excellent laptops. A little boxy and no-frills, but very well made. I just stuffed 3 of them into my checked luggage and did about 9 flights / 30k miles with 'em and they held up great.

Sometimes you can buy factory direct, as others have said. CompUSA sometimes has some, as does Office Depot, you just have to watch the ads. They are great machines, but if you can don't get the thumb scanner. It is more problems than it is worth.

What trouble did you have with the fingerprint scanner?

I've had a lot of luck with Toshiba. You may want to check PC Connection for whatever brand you decide to go with. I get their catalog and they normally have some decent deals.

Here's the link to the Laptop/Notebook page:

Not a thumb scanner, it's a fingerprint scanner. It works great, highly recommend it. Instead of typing in account names and passwords for system and website log on you just drag your finger across a little scanner and it auto-completes the account name and password for you. In addition to being quick and accurate, it is also more secure. No typing so no way anyone can look over your shoulder and record your login info. Never a problem with the application.

There is supposedly 3rd party software available for securing individual files using the fingerprint scanner but Lenovo does not distributed it anymore. From what I have heard some people did have problems with that application, don't know what the issue(s) were.
