Interesting article. Like many things the 'LEEDS' mania that has overtaken the architecture/building industry these days is rife with gimmics and 'sizzle'. Good design is timeless and as the article says a good design often is 'green' to begin with and does not need the many add ons that seem to go with the 'green' label.
That said many good products have come to the market that can enhance the efficiency of modern buildings, including new high performance insulations, geo-thermal heating systems,low or no v.o.c. coatings and many 'sustainable' finish materials for flooring and trim. So while there seems to be a lot of nonsense out there, some good things can be found.
It was amusing to read about the new building in San Fran that uses more energy than the older, larger building it replaced. Bottom line should be a net savings in energy it seems to me....
