Default any plumbers out there........

Just was wondering about an odd situation....came home the other day to a pungent smell wafting thru the house
and tracked it down to the drain in the master bath shower, it seems to come and go, any one have any ideas ?

Thanks in advance ;?

how often do you use the shower? if not to often then the p traps may have no water in it, or it may not have one at all the p trap is what keeps foul gas/order from coming up into the house

Try pouring a cup of bleach in the drain or a good drink of DrainO. DO NOT MIX.

Check your vent for a brids-nest or other obstruction. When the tank produces too much pressure for the blocked vent it escapes through the next easiest point. Your shower might have the shallowest p-trap.

Good luck!

That's the most likely cause - no water in the trap. Run some water in the shower or pour some down the drain. No need for chemicals. Check back later. Make a point to run water in the shower every couple weeks. Second most likely is a clogged vent. Often you can go on the roof and run a garden hose down the vent pipe. No need to turn the water on, just use the hose to "snake" it.

BTW: I'm not a plumber but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

is the waste pipe plastic or the old cast iron?if it's the cast iron most likely the p-trap has a hole in it and letting the water out.you may also have a bad studer vent in a cabinet if it's a newer house.

Agree with Tommy, or may have a cracked pvc p trap too.

Studer vent allows air to enter the vent pipe to break the vaccum that would siphon the water out of the trap. It functions
as a check valve to block air or sewer gas from exiting the vent pipe. Use to be used for island sinks and aplications where
a normal vent thru roof was impractical.

OK. The plumbers I know call it a "bootleg vent". I don't think it was legal (hence the name "bootleg vent") but my friend put one in my former house when we added a bathroom in the basement.

I would think a leaking trap would leave signs unless it was on the ground floor.
