Default Singapore hotels?

I have a 28 hour stopover coming up in Singapore. Can anyone suggest a good (gringo friendly) hotel?

I've stayed at the Orchard Hotel right at one end of Orchard Road. Decent hotel central to everything.
Regardless of where you stay make sure to go to the Long Bar at the Rafffles Hotel and have them make you up a Singapore Sling - that's where it was invented during the days of the British Empire! Make sure they make you one from scratch rather than pour you one from the ready-made batch! It'll cost around $17 though! If you like Indian food the restaurant at Raffles serves the best I have tasted,
Another place to consider staying is the River Area. Pleanty of local cuisine outdoors eateries along the river and you can take an inexpensive boat ride as well as visit the puter outlets.

Have a read here.

Oddly enough someone told me the same thing just the other day about getting a singapore sling there.

Any specific comments on local hotels vs staying in a large chain? It's not my dime but my budget is in the $200-350/night range. Since my stay is brief I just want to make sure I have a nice safe/convenient place to park my bags and then be able to get out and explore from there.

Lovely frontage however next to reception is a working nightly brothel come bar where woman travelling on their own are not encouraged to use. The ladies take their men past the swimming pool to the car parks to do their business. If you have children do not stay here. No suitable bar in this place however I was told to walk a block down the road as their was a nice english bar where I could get a drink rather than going into the ladies of the night bar adjacent the main reception. I was astonished. Rooms are very dirty however beware looks are very deceiving, pay a tad extra and you will enjoy your place of stay in lovely Singapore.

I stayed for 10 days in sept 2007, they gave us very dirty room, smelly and the bedsheets are stained. When I asked to change the room they requested me to wait till evening, they shifted me to another room which is little better than the older room but still to dirty............
I think the hotel is good from outside only but the rooms are so bad
I don't recommend this hotel to anybody unless you want smelly room.

I guess prostitution is a real problem in the hotel district. It appears to clog the streets around certain hotels. Maybe that could be a plus for some.

Just got back from there last week (was there for a week). Lots of nice hotels down by the marina. We stayed at the Pan Pacific right across from Suntec City. Many other hotels around there - Mandarin Oriental, Ritz Carlton, Marina Mandarin, Penninsula, etc. - all gringo friendly - no problem at all.

You could stay down on Orchard Rd., but same stores and restaurants, different location . . .

Did the Raffles Hotel thing because that's the "touristy" thing to do. Nothing special about the bar or the drinks - peanuts in the shell, and you toss the shells on the floor - they did have a nice gift shop, though - won't let you into the hotel proper (even the lobby) unless you're a guest.

Singapore airport is very nice . . .

Let me know if you need any more info.

Do NOT worry about being safe in Singapore. It is the cleanest, safest city in the world. They have a zero tolerance policy there towards any crime, regardless of how small.
For example, you won't find chewing gum on the sidewalk - then once you notice that you will notice that no one is even chewing the stuff!
Get out and about - you'll be fine.

BTW, don't even consider taking your illegal smoke of choice with you - they are quick to carry out sentences there.

They have a Night Zoo there. Basically you take a self-propelled tram around the zoo in the dark and they have positioned feeding stations right by the track so that all of the animals come to feed. Neat for a while.

Oh right, sorry, I knew that, LOL. Planning a busy trip and Singapore is my one day "vacation" in the middle of it.

Only because it works out well with the rest of my travel and would probably let me score a free night or two on the company, looks like the Grand Hyatt is also on Orchard road and would be a decent choice...?

Reel - that hotel sounds great! I think I have stayed in one of their sister properties in Jacksonville by accident once...

The Hyatt is a good choice and centrally located. If you have time, check out the zoo (day or night) and the aquarium on Sentosa Island.
