Cozumel Cruise ship excursions

We are going to be in Cozumel from 8am unil 10pm. I though we could just rent scooters or a buggy and do our own exploring over the island. I have order a good map of the island and reefs and would just like to go at our own pace, shopping , snorkeling, sight seeing etc when we want to.
Has any body else done this before. Any recommendation, do's and don'ts?
Any input is appreciated.

I'd skip the scooter idea. Crazy drivers and hard to carry much stuff with you. We had a cab driver recommend a beach to us. He dropped us off and we set a time for him to pick us up and he was there. Most of the beaches have food, drinks and snorkeling. Can't remember the name of the beach we went to. Take a look at the website I PM'd you a while back. There should be a lot of advice over there.

Mayan ruins were cool 45min bus right but it was ok because nice new buses load right by the dock just about. Its was crazy the whole drive was down the straight flat dirt highway and all along the road you saw these tiny houses/shacks with no water and no electricity. Don't forget to go to Carlos&Charlies for some Dos eques!!! good times I think? haha., what cruise line and ship ?

Obviously depends what you into. I have been there six time and the last time I was there we went on a catamaran sailboat that took us to reef for snorkeling. There were lots of fish and they feed the fish so they surround you and take your pic. Then its off to a private beach for more swimming, floats, jet skiis if you want to pay for them or just lay in a hammock and off course drinks. By the time you get to the pier the music and drinks on the cat are flowing. Sorry but I dont remember the name of the boat. But i think if you just look for a catamaran snorkeling trip, you might get lucky.

Probably the most amazing part of it is how bad the Island was damaged during the last hurricane. Its amazing! The pier the cruise ships used to tie to were destroyed. :o
But the natives dont complain they just say we will rebuild. How refreshing.

Went to Cozumel on a Norwegian cruise. Cozumel is a dump. Stay on the boat and drink.

Cozumel is wonderful! I went there and stayed at a hotel for a week, and loved it. I dont recomend the scooters though that place is like a death trap for them I saw many near misses with taxis. Lots of good places to eat, and all sorts of snokeling things to do.
