tow insurance question

I have tow boat U.S. unlimited coverage, which as you know only entitles you to coverage within 25 miles of the port and if more than $2,500. has anyone ever gotten a tow fron further out? were you charged extra? does or aahs anyone combined this type coverage with your boat insuance. for instance, for about $40 I could buy another $1000 from progressive. just want some thoughts here on how it works.

Sea Tow has truly unlimited coverage. For $149 they will be there.

I have never had any towing service but I do carry 1,000 on my boat policy which runs $20.00 per year. You may here that they underwrite towing claims but you need to ask progressive if that is true. My Ins Co. said if I had repeated towing claims they could choose to remove the coverage and they do not increase premium because of a towing claims.

There has to be some limitation, if you purchased tow insurance on a small trawler and got stuck in the middle of an atlantic crossing I am fairly certain they would not come to tow you in.

I just went to their website and it says it is limited to $5k if it is too far. still though, pretty good deal. I may switch.

Common sense would dictate that the chosen service has to be able to get to you ... ;)

Sure, they could get to you. But would they?--I think not.

If you check your TowBoatUS towers amd marina guide that comes with your membership-- you will see that most towboatus compaines are 50 and 75 mile companies not the 25 mile.

Yeah, just about every coastal tow service works the middle of the Atlantic. Jeez, that common sense thing just gets more elusive ... ;)

For what it's worth, if you're a AAA member, the SeaTow discount is worth looking into... I believe it's in the range of 15% annually --- just a thought if their plan fits your needs. I do both, as land or sea can cost you $$$ if you're not a member, and it works for us.

Re: tow insurance question

I just used my BoatUS on the road towing [ Boat and truck ] and BoatUS was AWESOME and fast .

When it was all over all I had to do was sign my name. That 24 mile tow to greenville Tx. was well worth the cost of membership

and yes they will all come get you and what I understand if your service is not in your area then you call BoatUs and they can arrange a tow for you .

Re: tow insurance question

I would point out that not all boat insurance policies will cover towing for mechanical failures or dead batteries, etc like boat us or seatow. in the case of my own boat insurance (auto-owners btw) the towing is covered up to $500 for "covered losses" which means if the insurance covers the cause then they cover the tow. dead battery is not a covered loss so its not covered for towing. as a result I carry boat US as well.

if you are relying on your boat policy for towing you should double check this with your agent.
