Default Is Woods Done?

Could he have been pushed too hard too young? Is Jack's record safe?

It's going to be interesting to see how he reacts to putting his health before the game, especially now that he has a family.

Hell, could you imagine him not coming back - what a way to go out - with a US Open!

BETHESDA, Md. (June 30) - Tiger Woods does not know when he can play golf again, but he said Monday his rebuilt left knee has been sore his entire pro career and he looks forward to playing on two good legs.

"My left knee has been sore for 10 to 12 years," Woods said during a conference call for his AT&T National tournament, his first public comments since reconstructive surgery last Tuesday. "It will be nice to finally have a healthy leg. The doctors have assured me that my long-term health will be a hell of a lot better than it's been over the last decade. I'm really looking forward to that."

Woods said doctors used a tendon from his right hamstring to rebuild the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, which he said had always been weak and finally snapped while jogging on a golf course last July.

He is in a brace and will be on crutches for three weeks to keep weight off his knee.

Woods said he most likely would not be able to attend the AT&T National, which starts Thursday at Congressional, because there was swelling on the flight home to Florida after surgery and doctors have advised him to avoid planes.

"But who knows?" he added. "I don't really listen to doctors all that well, anyway."

Woods said he had to use crutches for three weeks, followed by gradually putting weight on his knee, then flexing it.

"As far as longterm, I really don't know," he said. "We have to see how this thing heals. Everyone heals at a different rate. Some people are back to playing sports in six months, some are nine, some are 12. So to be honest with you, no one really knows until we start the rehab process."

Woods will miss his first major since turning pro at the British Open at Royal Birkdale, where he finished one shot out of a playoff in 1998. He also will miss the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills, and the Ryder Cup.

Tiger could play with a 3 wood, 3 iron 7 iron 2 wedges and a putter and still beat majority of the current PGA players.

He has the event won on Thursday and everybody else starts playing for second. They even admit that... So is he done... not by a long shot he and Hank can reinvent his swing and be back and even m ore dangerious....

I remember reading his 'how i play golf" book a few years ago and he encouraged snapping one's left knee straight on the follow through. i remember thinking "wow, that can't be good for the knee."

Will he play again, I think it's a no brainer. He might not play as often, but the incentive is too great not to. So close to beating out Jack's record (his goal since he could talk practically) and the business end is huge. Ratings are much bigger when Tiger Woods plays, pure and simple.

Since he just won the US Open with a busted knee, i'd say he's got a few wins left. His game isn't about being the longest hitter anymore... it's more about the fact that he can, at any time, pull together a rally and close your five shot lead. He'll be three holes back, sink a big putt and the screams from his gallery will make hearts sink all the way up the leader board. Few can stand up to the unrelenting pressure he puts on a player.

That said, with an exposed weakness, maybe it'll be tougher to psyche the other guy out?

Its Golf . . . he'll definately be back.

NFL players have this type of surgery and come back from it regularly in this day and age. I think there may be a bit more strain put on the ol knee in that application.

Actually, from a torque perspective, he might equal or pass the strain put on the ACL. He certainly won't come close to an NFL player when you consider impact though.

I've had 2 ACL replacements, and given Tiger's incredible fitness - I'm pretty sure he'll be fine

Please, not another "Is Woods done?" thread! He'll be back next year and probably better than ever.

Yes, I was considering impact and collision forces on the knee in my statement.

Furthermore, he says he played on a "bad knee" for 10 or 12 years during which time he has rivaled the greatest ever to play the game.

The question should probably be, how great will he be now that he will play on two good knees?

+1 I hope he does come back and I'm sure he will. I think he is just as interested in how his career will progress, as everyone else is.

I can't even imagine how he got himself through the Open, and to win it the way he did. This is truly a special time for golf and for everyone who loves the game and admires the players.
