Tow Vehicle Question
Looking at an 05 GMC Yukon XL with a 5.3, 3.42 Rear axle and Heavy Duty tow package. Will be towing 5-6K boat 200 miles a couple times a year. Any concerns with the transmisson or 3.42 Rear axle on this vechicle.

RE: Tow Vehicle Question
I have the same setup, but mine is an 01. No real problems but brakes on the trailer should be working and you will be adding fuel often. Mine gets no better then 12MPG without a trailer behind it.

Re: Tow Vehicle Question
I would suggest adding a tranny fluid cooler if the vehicle does not already have one.

Re: Tow Vehicle Question
Its not the weight to be concerned with, its the wind drag. 200 miles is a pretty long haul with those gears. Add a tranny cooler and keep it out of over drive. The problem with having a half ton tow vehicle is not if it can do it. It will tow the boat just fine. The speed at which you will be able to tow is the problem. If the speed limit is 70, everyone else is going 80 and you're on the verge of causing an accident at 55. I would look for a vehilce with lower gears.

Re: Tow Vehicle Question
. 3.42's arnt that short of a gear. by the time you factor in the tire size it should be reving much over 2K rpm's in overdrive , you can tow in OD as long as your in a flat part of the country i wouldnt reccomend towing in over drive in the mountains . that youkon should have a tow /haul mode.. and 5-6K lbs trailer and boat shouldnt be that hard for the truck. i agree with watching the speed though dont drive 90mph towiung something like that.
