Default Did a cooler test (kinda) Coleman vs Igloo

I recently posteda thread about the new 72 qt Elite Marine Igloo cooler I bought at Worst marine to replace the 70qt Extreme Coleman that the UV rays were starting to beat up.... http://www.thehulltruth.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=198165&posts=3

I had two coolers worth of 'fridge stuff' to bring back to NJ from FL last week. I froze four one gallon water bottles and a case of 16oz bottles tostuff cool for a few days. Decided to do my own test since I had the right conditions.... I put 2 of the gallons in each cooler about the same amount of stuff from the fridge and half a case of frozen 16oz bottles. Loaded them Tuesday Morning, emptied them Friday... The results... The Coleman did a much better job. There was no frozen water in the bottles in the Igloo at all, none. The gallon jugs in the Coleman were still about 70% frozen! The Colemans hinges, handles, clasp, and drain cap are inferior, but it holds the cold a lot better than the Igloo for sure. Note that the Coleman is taller and has more insulation in the bottom part, which also has a super nice drain troth built in.

This is in line with Power Boat Report's test results. The Coleman is better.

This is a good post! Helpful, I am looking into a new ice chest this year, was thinking of one of the sweet, SSI or other premium ones. But.. to buy a Coleman and put the rest in my fuel tank is modern thinking for me..

According to those results. 70% ice left in the colman and 0% ice left in the igloo. That says that the igloo is total junk.

Coleman Xtreme Marine 70 is $47 (Sports Authority)
vs
Igloo Marine 72 is $70 (Boatersworld)

Could the be flawed since the content wasn't exactly the same? Or possibly that the igloo had a bad lid?

Do you mind testing it again with equal content. For example ice only. Let both cooler sit out at night to even the temperature. Then in the morning - fill both cooler with 20lb of fresh ice and record the results over a few days.

Photo would be a bonus.

That's not a very scientific test.

The coolers would have to have the same contents and be kept in the same conditions.

If the results were close then the conditions would be under more scrutiny but with results like that there doesn't appear to be any reason for a retest. That's pretty huge.

Years ago I needed a bunch of Ice ...More than the machine could make so I filled both Igloo and Colemans owned a couple of each back then to the top with only ice allowed the water from the melting ice to drain (it was summer time) they were under a big tree in my yard and after 2 days they both had close to 80% or more solid ice ...

If you allow the water to drain your ice will stay solid linger...

This is a real world test sounds like to me. Some people have a lot of nerve. "Unscientific, Can you test is again"..some people need to get a grip on reality

No,they're right. One had condiments & drinks, the other had salad dressings & drinks! Much different results can be expected even if they are both the same size, with the same exact amount of ice, sitting next to each other for the exact same amount of time.

Fill both coolers with a case of Dos Equis and equal amounts of ice. Send coolers to me. I'll let you know which cooler kept them cold the longest.

Ditto; the Coleman also beat some of the way more expensive brands. You could replace Coleman hinges etc. many, many times for the price difference and have colder stuff and still have money left over.

Afish

So, now, if I've got this right....the Coleman is a great cool cooler, but is a total POS and will fall apart in 1/5th the time of the Igloo, which is pretty horsepucky at keeping stuff cold but will probably last forever. So, being a true THTer, I have several conclusions:

1) Spend 2 or 300 manhours swapping all the hardware and hinges from your Igloo to your Coleman, then trash the Igloo, and feel smug as hell, or

2) Just ignore the whole deal, since the money spent replacing Colemans every six months or so will about equal the extra amount spent buying iice for the Igloos, except..

3) That with $5.25 gas/diesel in our trucks, none of us will have any money for ice or coolers anyway.

Happy Memorial Day!

As for testing an igloo vs coleman. I have a brand new 94qt elite cooler vs a brand new 100qt regular coleman (non xtreme).

Elite was $125 plus tax
Coleman was $42 plus tax

I will report back in a few days with the full results.

If this coleman can last for at least 3 days in Florida's hot sun - it will be the winner of the most bangs for the buck. Why 3 days. Well. Most of us are weekend warrior. That means is: Ice goes in on Saturday morning - (Day 1). For the hardcore. They will do an overnighter into Sunday night - (Day 2). Some of them will be too lazy to clean on that very same night. So it has to continue to stay cold till Monday night - (Day3).

Can't speak for the Coleman regular cooler. But from experience over the last 2 years as well as my test, the Coleman Extreme is hands down better at keeping cold, a lot better. The hardware (if you want to call it that), is not as good as even a standard Igloo. My cooler is needed for one day 90% of the time in FL and 2 days in NJ summer max. I've noticed the difference with this Coleman, I was surprised to find ice a few times days later. I have 10 year plus Igloos around here that have not begun to crack or delaminate, the Coleman started to delam in 2 years (as stated). The 'hardware' crumbled and the screws were rusty within a few months. Not ready for trash, but not nice enough for my boat either. It will be what keeps the kids outta the fridge 75 times a day all summer, out on the deck, getting their little boxes of kool-aid or whatever sugar spike it is. Because it's really good for keepin stuff cold...

I have found that if you use some block ice, even one 5 or 10 pounder in any cooler everything lasts so much longer. Even a small five pounder mixed in with cubes will greatly extend everything. Allowing the water to drain was also a good tip as the standing water will also degrade cooler holding time.
