Default Lawn Edger or Trimmer?

I've never been one for lawn care, but with the new house, I guess I have to start.

Do I need and edger or a trimmer?

I have a .2 acre lot (considered oversized in my town) which has a lot of edging - sidewalk in the front, cobblestone lined walkways and driveway and about 200 running feet of fencing-the newer light colored plastic? type. In some of the areas the soil is even with the trim work tops, in others it is below.

The fence is the real problem. Every 10 ft the post sticks out about an inch so getting close with the mower is not possible. I have a gas powered line trimmer/weed wacker that really makes a mess of the fence when I use it and adds the extra step of washing it down when I trim.

I'm thinking it would probably be best to go around everything with and edger, probably one that angles, but I don't know if it will work along the fence and I've never used one.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Edger for walkways, driveways and to shape flower beds. Line Trimmer to trim around things your mower's blades can't reach.

EDGING with a TRIMMER is mickey mouse... and it looks like shit too. Spend $300 bucks and buy the real deal. I highly suggest STIHL, HUSQUVARANA, REDLINE products (and spend the extra 30 bucks for the unit the commercial guys use, not some homelite sears special).

Mister Seacraft has it right as far as the uses for the tools. As far as brand and price goes, the ryobi all in one I bought six years ago is still kicking. Its like the whole 10,000 hour on an outboard debate. On a small yard you won't put enough time on it to kill it young so save your money for gas.

I bought a Stihl FS45 EZ start string trimmer and it is the best one I have ever owned by far.
Very light and powerful and always starts. I liked it so much that I bought a Stihl BG85 blower
and of course, I have their toolless MS270C chainsaw. I will never own another brand, EVER!!!

I own all stihl products too! Except my lawn mower, it's a snapper. With a name like that, how could I buy anything else!

Hey, my homelite trimmer is around 10 years old and starts on its first two pulls. I agree that an edger does a better job around driveways and such but if you have a brick or stone walkway it will chip them up some. If you take grass & weed killer and spray it right up against the fence it will help with the grass mess.

Pick up a stihl or echo weedeater that can handle attachments. You have your edger and trimmer with one unit,no sense buying two.I use them daily on 250 acres and they hold up well.

Thanks for the responses!

A friend of mine who is somewhat into yard work just popped over and basically recommended the same thing abt the grass and weed killer, and warned that if I used the edger against the fence and the majority of my other pavers/brick/stone work, it would chew them up in no time.

I tend to agree with the opinions regarding the quality recommendations; but then again, my Eager Beaver gas weed wacker I bought from Bradlees quite some time ago is still sputtering strong after 15 pulls
