Default upgrade home interior lighting w/ pics

Guys,

I'm renovating a townhome and it has this type of light in the kitchen.

I'd like to install this type or similar.

How do I get rid of the 12 x 12 hole and mount the replacement light .....it most likely mounts via a recessed round box using a threaded post/ cross bar.

Thoughts ?

either patch it (would not be much fun), or use a large medallion to cover up the area.

such as: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...270&lpage=none

Dave, Got any starboard left over from your boat projects? Cut a nice circle, rout the edges and glue it up with construction adhesive. Easier than working with drywall.

I'll remove the old and try to install one of these boxes........and then try to find a light fixture big enough to cover the Square hole.

I need more LIGHT !

If there are relatively few of the old recessed fixtures, what you are suggesting will work

It will look very unusual to have a bunch of those surface mounted fixtures in the kitchen. If there are several, I would recommend going with standard 6 1/2" round downlights

I would recommend going with round recessed fixtures in any case, unless you want the quick, easy solution. Round recessed fixtures will look much nicer, but require drywall repair to the ceiling
