Default Red Sox Rice falls short of HOF

I am very disappointed this am to learn that one of if not the greatest athlete to come from our home town of Anderson SC came up 16 votes short of making the
MLB HOF .

Do not have all the stats for Rice but he was a 2 time MVP and had what I think was a good enough career and batting numbers to get in.

I think next year is his last chance and hopefully he will get the needed votes to get in, my understanding is he just was not media friendly

Any of you Red Sox fans remember Jim Ed and feel the same way

I'm no Bosox fan , so no bias here. If you look at his stats compared to his era and took his name off the page, I think he deserves to be in.

Baseball-reference.com profiles all players and compares them to HOF stds. Here are the 10 players Rice's career is most like statistically. The asterisks denote HOFers.

Orlando Cepeda (911) *
Andres Galarraga (893)
Ellis Burks (882)
Duke Snider (882) *
Joe Carter (866)
Dave Parker (856)
Billy Williams (854) *
Moises Alou (850)
Willie Stargell (842) *
Luis Gonzalez (841)

Eddie Murray was a pr!k to reporters and he's in with a good resume, albeit one of a compiler in the later years.

Unfortunately, some of his stats pale in comparison to the juiced era, and now, 18 years retired, those who remember him only remember the qualitative.

What do those numbers in parenthesis represent?

He has one more year and statistically, he should be there. Reporters never liked him because he wouldn't lick their balls...

It's a Bill James sabermetric calculation.

You start with 1000 points. That's the same statistical player. And then there are math rules around the differences in various stats. Cepeda at 911 is as close statistically to Rice as anyone.
