Default How do you cut decking around a piling?

There's got to be a simple trick of the trade to consistently cut decking around a piling and leave an even gap. Thanks in advance.

Just like any scribe job. Just takes practice. I'm getting passable at it after 30+ years.

use a piece of scrap to scribe the cut onto for a "practice piece". Once you have it the way you want it, make the cut on the actual piece. This will add a bit of time to your project, but it will be almost exactly what you want. I say almost because if you are like me, nothing is ever perfect no matter how good it turns out. Just remember that small errors will only be seen by you.

I would've swore I saw an episode of Ship Shape TV a couple years ago that showed a simple way to lay it out. And of course I didn't need to remember it then, but now...

Cut the deck board to match the pile using a bucket as a guide with a similar diameter circle, then space the gap using whatever you want, and cut the excess off the back end (straight end) of the decking board. That's how we do it...probably not a "trick" but it works for us.

Lay the board against the piling as it will lay on the pier. Mark the outer edges with a square for the width of the circle. The measure how much board will remain and that will give you the depth of the cut. Use something like a bucket to get an even circle just hitting your markings then cut with a jig saw. After you master this it will go very quick and net. You could also mat a template of cardboard instead of a bucket.

Transfer paper works great here *
1. If you are doing one piling then I make a template out of paper, if more then a few I'd make a template out of cardboard of some sort (cereal box).
- you can either make a circle out of paper/ cardboard or you can tape several sheets of newspaper together and cut a circle out of it and use the hole in the newspaper as your template......I prefer the hole in the newspaper better because it allows me to use the news paper as a means to locate the hole. (If you need further explanation on this procedure let me know)
2. Measure the diameter of the piling then add whatever clearance distance you would like to that number.
3. take a tack/ small nail, a string with a loop on the one end and a pencil/ pen........draw out your circle the size you want on the material you are using for your template.

In the quick drawing below:
1) - brown planks have already been laid with a unified spacing
2) - layout your next set of planks on a level surface as if they were to be screwed/ nailed down with the appropriate spacing
* use transfer paper to mark out your piling location, size w/ spacing by using a tack/ nail, string and pencil/ pen....doing your circle on the transfer paper the mark will be transferred to your planks
3) - if transfer paper wasn’t used then layout your paper/ cardboard template and mark
4) - cut out your profile with a scroll saw
5) - lay down your cut planks and secure.

Also you can slide the end of the board against the side of the piling. Use a compass to scribe the mark using the point to slide against thepiling and the pencil on the board you want to cut. You cant get a more perfect cut. At least that i know of. Give it a try on a scrap piece first. Once you get it down packed it will go faster.

True that method does work "IF" one keeps the compass at a "true 90°" to the surface being scribed.....not all surfaces are easy to do that with.

Bend a wire coat hanger around the radius of the piling and use it to transfer the line to your boards.

Should have mentioned that. But IF you do, you are guaranteed a true fit. Take your time when scribing and it should come out great.

My motto is: Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with a crayon, cut it with an axe.
