Default Another BMW question..Z3?

Anyone have experience with one? I'm thinking of an '02 Z3 2.5 as a new to me car. I'm not interested in speed, just decent handling and a convertible. I really like the looks of the Z3 so other small 2 seaters are not in the equation. The other thread on BMW's has me a bit concerned over service issues. Anyone have one--and what problems did you have?

Yeah; thanks for the insight.

This car is of course for the timeswhen the F450 dually diesel 4x4 I use to tow my jon boat 2 times a year to the landing a half mile away is in for service.

BMW makes a good car. I had a new z4 for a month, sold it for a boxster which is nights and days more fun to drive. Drive both before you buy, the pricing is similar.

Fun car, go for the M package, the thing is a rocket ship. It's nuts, just grab the wheel and pray. You can pick them up for around $15k now.

Not really looking for a lot of speed; my racing days are over. I'd rather have the good gas mileage. Just wondering about service, what to watch for etc.

Z3's are pretty bulletproof - no design or mfr defects on the car....The M versions had some differential mount problems, but the 2.5's are good. If the car was used with the top down most of the time, the top can wear at the front corners - check to see the top is in good shape, we replace a few of those......

The one I am looking at actually looks like it never had the top down--it's in 'as new' shape. It's miles are down in the low 20's, and it's an '02, so I think it's been taken good care of. I have made an offer on it and I guess we'll see tomorrow if the owner accepts. It also has a manual top, which is rare--that I would rather have anyway. I have been looking for Z3 'problems', but can't seem to find any. The older 6 cyl (pre 2000) had problems with frame cracking, but they seem to have fixed that problem. I don't want one older than a 2000 anyway (due to the redesign) so that wouldn't affect me.

You said don't talk about any other choices, so I won't mention the Honda s2000. Got almost 30 mpg, and some of that was double the speed limit.

I researched the M briefly when I was shopping for a convertible to replace my Wrangler. I could find no real issues. Decided against it mostly because of room, I'd have to choose between the GF and my Thelma (my golden retriever). Why pizz off the GF all the time? Ended up with a Carrera, always wanted one.

I drove one. Compared to the Z3, at least to me, it was MUCH louder, and much ore uncomfortable. Before driving one, I had thought about one, but afterwards, immediately eliminated it. I've had several Honda's and liked them all, but to me at least, the S2000 was a letdown.

Yeah, I have an S2000 also, and like it very much. The suspension is superior to the Z3.

I love those cars-congrats. I much prefer the classic look of the Z3 over the Z4. I would love to be able to pick one up in the next few years and keep it forever.

Beamer Z3 / Z4 = chick car.

Mazda Miata = chick car.

Pontiac Solstice = chick car.

Ford T-Bird = chick car.

But of course those cars would also be appropriate for guys feeling the need to get in touch with their feminine side, as well as for any metro-sexuals, Democrats, and all other incarnations of girly-boys.
