Default High MPG car

Looking to pick up a used car to run errands around town and use on weekends. Run 2 GMC 3/4 ton pickups during the week and gas prices are getting out of hand. Any thoughts on a used honda civic?
Thanks
Marc

Had a Civic a number of years ago and it was a wonderful car for getting around town at a very reasonable price. Never had one lick of trouble with it. Honda has a couple of small hybrids that get tremendous mileage and they still have the full tax credit available, whatever the amount is. Might make some sense to look new if the credit helps enough.

you cannot go wrong with a Honda. Had a '92 Civic EX that was bulletproof. But like Bugbuster said, I'd look at a Jetta diesel.

Bug.....that's the ticket...........got an 06 jeta diesel wifes daily driver during week, then every friday we head to the cottage (48 weekends last year) 186 miles 1 way. drive somewhat conservitivley 70 ish....average 45-46mpg including wifes 110 miles per week in town. definately diesel is the way to go. I don't think there is a hybrid out there that can do these numbers

As a guy that drives for a living, I have looked at all of these cars available. Volkswagon diesels are hard to come by because they don't sell them in this country anymore. The only diesel is the Touareg that starts at $68,000. I have a 1.8T Passat wagon that is great on mileage. I had the V6 Passat wagon before this one. It had lots of balls and got about the same mileage. About 32 on the road and 28 round town. Toyota seems to be kicking everyones behind with the high mileage cars. Look into a used VW diesel if you can find one. My buddy who is an appraiser has a 2001 Jetta Wagon diesel with 185,000 on it .. Going strong. Good luck.

I have a 2006 Civic Hybrid purchased new last year with 38K miles on it now. Averages about 42 mpg in the summer with A/C running and 46-49 in the fall / winter with no A/C running. Great car, no problems whatsoever, just change the oil and rotate the tires. One thing is key... check air pressure in tires frequently and keep them inflated to a high pressure.

I have a 2004 Civic coupe with 78K miles and zero problems. Did some research on the car - it was code named "Jennifer" during development - and my kid found out so I take a lot of s**t from him now. I've had a lot of Hondas and they were all good - great design, great quality (like Detroit can be of they get their heads out of their own butts). Here's the interesting thing though - every time I buy another car I find myself looking at VWs and Chevys (have a great GMC work van), but end up with another Honda. Grass is always greener, I guess. I have always thought the fit and finish of VW was head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd going back to the late 60s and always wanted one, but I just can't pull the trigger. You can't seem to go wrong with the Civic. Buy a used one and you'll have lots of $$$ available for water sports next year.
