Default Strange Email

I just got an email from a spammer where my email address showed up as that of the sender.

How the heck can this be?

Anybody else see one like this?

Nothing surprizes me when it comes to spam. They'll do anything to get you to open the email.

I get like 3 of these a day, plus my own mailserver tells me that some messages "I" sent out were undeliverable. However, I never sent those messages. I have complained to our IT guy for weeks if not months and he says, it's just one of those things... Personally, I think the IT guy is getting lazy. You are being what is called "spoofed". It could be someone using your own mailserver to send crap out, or it could be someone just using your own email address to send stuff out. Either way, if you figure out how to stop it, let me know so I can make my IT guy eat some chit for not fixin' it.

May not be able to stop it, without changing your email address (are even buying an Apple! ).

Somewhere, somebody got hold of your email address from a list. This person sends out email to a list with you as the name in the send box (the one you can see, anyway-called spoofing). When it gets to you, it looks like it came from you (although in the source of the email you'll get a better idea of where it really came from--proabably a realy server somewhere). The real sender floods an email list with good and bad addresses, and when the email hits a user that doesn't exist, that domain server bounces it back to you saying it was undeliverable...from you. And that's why you get "undeliverabe" messages back, even though you didn't send anything to that address.

So in short..your IT guy is probably right, but he could probably invest in a better spam filter like Postini or Trend Micro to kill some of it.

It means the Spammer has a soft-ware glitch. Posibly a virus - yay! Dont open these in case it's transmissable.

I had never seen or heard of anything like this before seeing an email from myself last night. I did open it and it was some advertisement for Viagra. That's the last damm thing I need!

Now that I know what's going on, I won't be opening anything else from myself. I still don't see how that works though. Thanks for the input.

I received responses from time to time from corporate e-mail firewalls informing me that they will not accept my e-mail. Like you, I did not originate the e-mail.

One great way to get on these spammers lists isn't even in your control. Ever have a friend who CCs you a joke and you are in a list of about 2000 other people when you get the email? Then one of them forwards that Joke including that list to another 2000 people, and so on and so on. Well, when a spammer gets that he gets 1 billion valid email addresses. Just something to think about.
