You should never be anywhere but your own home without your ID, imo....

I don't have any problems with it as it's just a sign of the times. Looks to me like all they are addressing is requiring some form of personal identification onboard.

As the article says, only the state of Alabama requires this. Imagine as a LE officer trying to determine if you are up to no good simply by looking at your boat registration. The boat could be stolen and they'd never know you were not the owner without some kind of identification.

This sounds like old news to me at least where the Coast Guard is concerned while stopping a documented vessel fro a routine inspection. They already ask for identification for the Captain and the owner if they are aboard. Been there done that this past January in Florida on the ICW.

Old news.........

You have a problem carrying ID on the boat? Do you also have a problem carrying ID when you're driving your car?

Licensing as a boat operator is a seperate issue. NUMEROUS states already require some form of evidence of boater education in order to operate. I don't have any problem with that at all, just like I don't have a problem with folks needing a drivers license to drive a car.

Not sure what constitutional freedom you are concerned with here.

I don't have a problem with me as the operator of the vessel needing it.
But one statement caught my Eye and bothers me a bit.

"We would always know who's on board, what their backgrounds."
Just wondered If that means all on board? Or just the Capt?
And to alway's know who's on board? How does that work? With out alway's stopping them.
Just curious.

You trying to tell us you don't always know who's on your boat?

Quit picking up them hookers or you're gonna get yourself in trouble.

Fearnaut
I think this guy makes since.

I am a professional trainer in the computer security field with a government clearance. What is wrong with a state-issued driver's license, with a "boat" endorsement like we do for motorcycles or trucks? What is wrong with a passport? What is wrong with the documentation paperwork or state stickers? If it is going to be a tax, great, call it that and move on. But to invent a new way to "check us out" is a ridiculous waste of time, money and effort that will do nothing to enhance security or prevent someone bent on destruction or terrorism. Just look at the window dressing at the airports to see what the system will be.
