I'll never forget watching it launch at sunset from the roof of a hotel in Kissimmee back in 2001.

Spectacular.

It was certainly a nice clear day for it today...oh and warm! Unfortunately, I was in the office and it slipped my mind.

I posted this elsewhere, so I'll cut &Paste... (I am currently in Jacksonville, BTW)

Today, at 11.38 am EDT, Space Shuttle Discovery launched on time for mission STS-120 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STS-120 ).

A real live spaceship. And, I watched it with my own eyes from 122 miles away... the first launch I have seen since 1988 when I went to watch STS-26 ( the first mission after Challenger's last flight).

I just got the SatTV activated aboard Blue Eagle, and since I got up this am, after checking the weather channel (part of my AM coffee ritual), every screen onboard was tuned to NASA TV. I did a little chartwork, and determined that she'd cross my bow visibly at about 1500ft three seconds or so after ignition (I was bang on). I told the guys around the yard, and was pleased to find that they all wanted to see it, so I blew the horn at T-2m, and they crowded the southward dock, a few joining me on the bridge so we could monitor it on the big screen.

We had a perfect veiw, and the sky was perfectly clear in our veiwing range- we could see it clearly right up to booster seperation.

A spaceship. How friggin cool is that?

I go to the coast for just about every launch, but could not get away for this one. By luck, I happened to see it on my way to lunch. About 50 miles away in Orlando.

Watched from a friends sailboat but LE kept us about ten miles back. It was almost out of sight before the sound made it to us. Pretty cool sight. I'll post pics when I get back to TN.

The thing is so huge, it's hard to judge the distance to it. I worked at the cape one summer when they were building launch complex 39 A&B. They piled up A huge pile of dirt..so big that D9 Caterpillars looked like little toys on it. About a year later they scraped it all away, probably to build the crawlerway. I guess the dirt preloaded the pad area and compacted it. The VAB sits on piling driven all the way to China.

Just watched both, the Space Station & two minutes later, the Shuttle, go streaking though the clear Texas sky... Pretty cool...and those two are haulin' arse!

We occasionally see it here in the Savannah area. Late afternoon and night launches are best. Looks like a red Tylenol capsule at night from here.
