Default 04 Expedition brake controller

Guys I'm doing the research for a friend.

He just purchased a 04 Expedition w / out the optional trailer package. It does have a hitch and is wired with a flat 4 plug.

He wants to be able to tow a #7000 dual axle enclosed utility trailer.

What is the best brake controller and aproximately how much would this installation cost ?

Thanks !

I have the same truck and it came with the tow package. I don't think they non-tow packages came with tranny coolers. Just something to think about as well.

FYI, all '04 Expeditions came with a hitch and the flat 4-pin trailer connector as standard equipment.

Whether your friends '04 will pull 7000 lbs will be determined by which engine it has - if is the 5.4 then it has enough guts to pull 7000 lbs, but Bulls is correct - if the Expy does not have the 7-pin connector (ie. the blue/5th wire on the 7-pin connector (not available on your friends Expy) is for the brake controller) then the vehicle is missing the tranny cooler, larger radiator, heavier battery and load-leveling suspension (<- the load leveling suspension was standard on '04's, but was deleted as a standard item in '05), so even with the larger engine he is already missing some of the key ingredients for a tow vehicle.

Don't have a clue what a brake controller installation will cost, but if he is going to pull 7000 lbs on a regular basis then he is going to need more than a brake controller (ie. as a bare minimum he will need a tranny cooler, rear helper springs, and a 5.4 engine if the '04 he bought does not have one.).

Thanks.

I don't know how often he will need the ability to tow 7K. 90% of the driving is flat terrain.

I have a feeling he will add a controller with the 7 pin connection and possibly an aftermarket air suspension if need be.
