Default How to build a water softener?

I am sure many of you out here have seen or maybe even have used one of those portable in line water softeners. My question is does anyone know how to build one? I know that you can buy the softener resin and PVC pipe for under $30. As many of these softeners are over $350 any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I woud check with some plumbing companies or a Culligan, Kinetico store to find an older pulled unit. I remove about
5 to 10 per year in my business. Gotta ask why not buy new at Lowe's for about 500 bucks and be done with it?
There is a lot more to a water softener than $30 odd bucks of material.

Next what does this have to do with boating?

signmansez, tern two, Sorry not familiar with the simple portable tube units. I read over the site and see that these
units are rated for 4 to 6 grains of hardness, most of the units we use in our area need to remove 60 to 90 grains of
hardness. I would still think that the home units could do this job well and would recharge automatically.

Is your boat behind your house? We have very hard city water. They calcify the water to bind to the chlorine. All the fixtures in the house were getting caked on white stuff. We put a water softener on the whole house including the waterlines out to the dock. It is an unbelievable differance washing the boats now. Spotless and a lot less wiping. Now I got to change out the fixtures. Best thing we did for the house.

I keep my boat in a marina. Many others have the soft spot system and they give good reports. The home syetem seems like it would be hard to carry down the dock.
