Default UNDERSIDE RUST ON NEW CHEVY TRUCKS

Just wanted to warn all you guys about the underside rusting under my/ your new 2007 Chevy Silverado.

GM no longer paints many cast iron/steel components in the driveline of the new trucks...

Take a look under your your next new truck before you buy...I wish I had.

Update: Just met with the GM area service rep for North Carolina and he indicated to me that that is standard for GM and that he would not customize my truck for me.

GM considers paint on the front axles, control arms, driveshaft yokes and lots of steering and suspension parts to be not required.

Make sure you get your new truck customized to protect you from rust....or better yet buy something other than a Chevy and get it standard.

I bought this truck to tow my MasterCraft and my Custom Carolina Boat...If this post was about a corvette or something then I could see your point.

Trucks tow boats.

Rudders, good post.

Obviously, it's Monday, the majority of people do not like being at work (can't say that I do either) and have to fuss at someone.

What exactly components are you referring to? I just looked under my 2 Fords and didn't see any obvious paint, or rust, and 1 is 8 years old. I dont believe it is common practice to paint much under there.

Better be careful, that chevy will rust out from under you in about 100 years. I wouldn't buy one either.

It's not off base at all. just was under a late -90's Chebby pickup, and the u-bolts that hold the rear axle to the springs had completely rusted thru. no significant body rust either. A crossmember had rusted through in a 6" long section also. No rust on anything painted. Don't discount this post..I was surprised at the extent of the isolated rust on non-painted suspension components.

The forged oem wheels on my corvette had burn marks from over machine buffing, which was then clear powdercoated over, leaving haze, permanently embedded in the wheels. GM said "Do the wheels roll?" (Yes) "Well then, they are not defective".

Good luck getting them to paint your axles....

Not off base at all. I have a Chevy Tahoe and right after I bought it, I noticed that there was rusty dust in the glove box. I looked beyond the box and saw that the metal just behind it was covered in rust. I freaked, but as someone above mentioned, was assured it was just surface rust. I checked a bunch more at the dealership, just to be sure, and they ALL had it. So, I am not surprised. Not sure I would buy a Chevy again. Of course, the GMC I bought just months later has the exact same rust issues. Given that I've had them both almost five years and nothing's changed, I would guess it's a safe assumption that it is surface rust and not a big deal.

IF the rust was the only issue, how many of you have gone through the infamous Chevy transmission. One truck went at 50,000, now the other is gone at 53,000. And then try and contact the GMC customer service line, what happened to buy American. You are switched to Dubai, an outsourced customer service. It may be time for me to switch truck manufacturers next time around.
