two Boaters Killed, Two Rescued in Barge Collision

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Two people have been rescued after a pleasure boat crashed into a barge at the mouth of New York Harbor Saturday night.

Two others were not so lucky.

The Coast Guard says a tug boat was pulling the barge through the Ambrose Channel when a 24-foot yacht came between, struck a towing cable and disappeared in the darkness.

It happened just after 11 o'clock just south of the Verrazzano Bridge.

One man was pulled from the water by another fishing vessel called 'Captain Dave' and was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital. A 46-year old boater was rescued by NYPD divers and taken to Kings County Hospital. Both men were in stable condition.

A 51-year old man and a 33-year old man were pulled out from under the boat and declared dead at the scene.

Just another example of people not knowing proper recognition of nav lights on tugs and barges. Too bad it cost these people their lives.
