Default Shuttle Launch Next Tuesday

Some friends from Canaveral have invited me to join them to watch this one from the water. Anybody else planning to do the same?

If you've never seen a liftoff, it is worth the trip. I grew up in Titusville, across the river from launch complex 39 a&b. Shots used to go "down range", south, parallel to the coast, but orbital stuff goes pretty much up and due east. It's still pretty dam impressive to see. And hear.

The only live launch I've seen was at night back when I lived in Lakeland, FL for a short time. I went outside just to see what I could see, and that sucker lit up the whole parking lot when it took off.

Obviously there was no sound from that far away, but my buddy in Merritt Island says you can feel those things take off while watching from his marina slip. Hopefully it won't be delayed as I have to be in FTL by Wednesday.

Early in the capes history, it was dangerous to walk around after a shot. The low frequency vibration would cause all the snakes to crawl around, agitated. I've heard a shot down here in Stuart, about 100 miles away. Maybe it won't be scrubbed.

This is a good link to keep up with pre-launch stuff:
http://www.floridatoday.com/floridat...ogs/spaceteam/

Weather looks a little iffy but it always does. If you are watching from a boat I recomend these viewing sites:

1) Indian River (ICW) west of the VAB and east of Titusville. That is about as close as you can get without a KSC badge.
2) Banana River NW of the Canaveral Locks at the west end of Port Canaveral. Not as close #1 and the shuttle is flying away from you but still a good view.

You can see the shuttle and launch pad from erither of those spots. Have fun!

Do a search for pictures. I believe it was Onewolf who took some awesome shots. We go to almost every launch, although we watch them from a friend's deck on the river in Titusville. It is worth the trip.

Bear with me. I went to high school in Titusville, and the school was on the river. We had the opportunity to witness, firsthand, the first manned shot. Principal came on the intercom, said "The school board has said we cannot let you out to watch the shot. So, we're gonna have a fire drill..everyone to the front of the school". Good ol' Mr. Scarborough.

Attaboy! Good luck. Can you see it all lit up on the pad? Pretty impressive, ain't it?

Okay, better late than never I guess. I was downloading pictures from my camera and thought I would share these. Yep, we were a ways away and my zoom lens is only a 3.8 x 15. This thing was almost out of sight before we ever heard a sound. Pretty awesome!

Oh yeah, it was well worth the effort.

I must say I was disappointed we were unable to get any closer, but it was still quite a sight. I would have thought it would have been a lot louder than it was, even given the distance we were from it.

Even where we were, the LE folks were very picky about this imaginary line in the water. They actually made us move about 50 feet even after we were anchored. Thirty minutes after that, a tour boat with paying passengers anchored well beyond our original location. Apparently, the LE guys didn't have any problem with that.

Maybe one day, or should I say night, I'll get to watch a night launch over the water like that. That would have to be much more dramatic.
