Default Remember When Free Bird Hit The Ground?

Thirty years ago this Saturday, the plane carring Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in Mississippi.

I was 20 years old living in a beat up old mobile home with no telephone, and I remember a friend of mine driving over to tell me the news. He was a drummer in a local rock band, and we were both big Skynyrd fans. It was almost like losing a member of the family.

The new guys are okay, but there will never be another real Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Nah, it's the one I kicked her out of when she divorced my dad.

There's more truth to that than you realize.

Yeah, that's pretty good, but I remember when the surviving band members, Billy Powell in particular, gave ole' Artemus a lot of grief about his memory of that crash.

That's funny, I went back and looked at that link more closely and I could have sworn it was Artemus who gave the account of how Cassie's throat was cut and Billy who disputed it. Never heard the part about anybody getting shot after the crash though.

I'd say those tickets are worth some money if he does. It would be interesting to see what they would fetch on eBay.

One other thing that I thought was strange was that the original "Street Survivors" album cover showing the band in flames (Alan Collins in particular) is being used on the recently re-released CD even though it was quickly pulled from the shelves after the crash. I picked that CD up a while back and was surprised to see the photo again.

My buddy I mentioned has the original album with the original cover which was pulled. That too should be worth some money to a serious Skynyrd fan.

someone's older brother in my neighborhood had tickets, and i remember people going over to his house just to look at the tickets...

My first reaction was to say you guys must be a bunch of real old men to have remembered that far back. Then I realized I also remember and must too be that old.

I never got to see the original band play - too young for that. A good friend of mine's dad was on the plane for the crash and he survived. He was part of the road crew with the original band - also toured w Aerosmith. (interesting read on the wikipedia link that Aerosmith was looking at the same plane...)

A lot of the "home video" type footage in the "Freebird" movie was taken by my buddy's dad. When the band came back for the reunion tour we had a big group that always went to see the shows in Cleveland. Our "Skynyrd Show Pre Parties" were a lot of fun - one time we had two busses rented to get the group there and back safely. Got to go back stage a few times and on the Skynyrd tour bus once. Have some pictures of Leon Wilkerson at one of our after parties.

Hey If you have a "Street Survivors" LP with
the original cover art of the group engulfed in flames
KEEP IT! After the accident they changed the cover art
out of respect for the group.

Not for nothing but I thought that was 1979 when they crashed?

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd play in July of '77 just a few months before the crash. The lead act was the J Geils Band, followed by Skynyrd, then the big name of the time - Peter Frampton. The show was at JFK Stadium in Philly, which is no longer there, which was next to Veteran's Stadium, which is no longer there, which was next to the Spectrum, where the '76ers and the Flyers no longer play. There were over 100,000 people there, and the ticket cost $10. A day I will never forget.

Hard to believe Skynyrd wasn't the main attraction of that show. No doubt whose music will live on for another 30 years.

The introduction of "Street Survivors" with that album cover along with "That Smell" sure does seem strange given how things turned out.

Oh yeah, I had a brain fart when I said Alan Collins was wrapped in the flames on the original cover. It was Steve Gaines who was killed and was engulfed in flames on that cover. Collins obviously survived.

I bought a copy of "Freebird, The Movie" when it came out of DVD a while back. Good times and tunes right up until the footage where they were on the plane. The movie closes with "Simple Man" being played through pics of the band and the credits. Hell of a story, but too bad it had to end so soon. Who knows what those boys would have accomplished if they hadn't been taken away.

Iwas in the 10th grade and their last concert was right here in the upstate of SC at the old Greenville Memorial Auditorium.

I had several friends that were at the show that night and while it was a great show most of them said they acted liked they were in a hurry to leave that night.

That is the day Rock N Roll died, IMHO.

It is amazing at how their music still is tops even to the younger crowd, I even recored on MTV one of the concerts with the "new version" and Johnny Van Zandt does a pretty good job and sounds just like his brother.

Rock will never be the same

Just curious but does anyone here have the original album Street Survivors that has the flames on it??

If I am correct that album came out before the crash and after the crash the record company went back and used a photo without the band standing in flames and the album with flames on it is supposed to be a collectors item

Something I was told this morning is that Jerry Lee Lewis was supposed to have been on that plane but had a "bad feeling about it" at the last minute and decided not to board it.

Any truth to this??
