--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The U. S. Coast Guard and the Hernando County Sheriff's Office found a capsized boat with six people clinging to the side of it early Tuesday afternoon.

The boat was 22 miles off shore. One person who suffered broken ribs was taken by helicopter to Spring Hill Medical Center.

The others on the boat were taken to Hernando Beach's dock.

The 17-foot-boat and its passengers departed out of Bayport Monday afternoon for a fishing trip. They were supposed to be back at midnight.

Sounds like six more nominees for the Darwin award.

Actually, I wouldn't have many worries about taking the right 17' boat offshore 22 miles after checking the weather and having a good VHF onboard to follow up dates. Assuming the water was flat, you could cover 22 miles in about 45-60 minutes. That should give you enough time to get out of harm's way.

Planning the trip as to return around midnight doesn't sound too bright though.

They were found the next day. The tides or wind could have dragged them out that far.

We always get such a bad rap - the boaters being rescued on TV almost always look like that... perhaps all the skinny guys drown

21 proline cc in 3-5 seas with a new inexperience operator.

Glad they all made back alive. Could of been worst? Basic equipment like life vest and handheld VHF and/or an PLB/EPIRB would of came in handy.

Here is the full story will a fluffy nice story line.
