Default Tappen Zee or George Washington Bridge....

I'm driving to MA tomorrow morning from Delaware. I should be heading through NYC area around 5am on Rt 95. For those frequenting this route, would I be better taking the TZ (and a longer distance route)at 5am or taking the more direct GW Bridge?

You should be OK at either crossing at that time of the morning...lighter traffic because of Jewish holiday too.

TZ TZ TZ TZ

YOUR GARMIN IS AN IDIOT. NEVER TAKE THE GW.

NEVER NEVER NEVER.

I boated out of Norwalk for 25 years and made the drive from central NJ hundreds of times. One teeny fender bender under the "apartments" on the NY side of the GW can cost you an hour or more. There is no escape from there, plus the road is narrow and full of huge potholes.

I agree with NJFISH..at that time neither should be an problem..so I would take the more direct GW route....also, getting on the thruway northbound off rt 17 last weekend I saw signs warning of contruction on the TZ..may still be an issue..

GW is faster with no traffic, but a dice roll.

TZ is more consistent. It may take longer, but there are rarely huge jams.

The Cross Bronx is a petrie dish for tractor-trailer accidents.

Alternate if driving a car and not a pickup without a cab (NY commercial vehicle laws.)

You can take the GW and pop onto the Deegan Expwy (87 North) or get on the Henry Hudson and take it north to the Cross County, and then the Hutchinson Pkwy north which will get you to CT on the Merritt and you're on your way.

MB -

That is what I was thinking of doing and thereby avoiding alot of the Rt95 traffic in CT ..... but then again, would the CT traffic be all that bad at 6am heading north?

95 in CT is a nightmare regardless since it's the only truck route through southern CT.

Another vote for the Merritt.

OH! Be sure to buy your gas in New Jersey. Even on the Turnpike it's a lot cheaper than NY or CT!
