Default Need a Small Business Computer Server Recommendation.

Can you suggest the best small business server to buy?

Its going to have less than 5 users, will run the accounting and job costing, but some of the ACAD drawing files we share are over 90 megabytes. Lots of remote access and Internet use also.

I only have a Walmart and a Piggly Wiggly in town so its going to be an Internet purchase.

Look into the dell Precision line of workstations, they are pretty high horsepower machines strictly aimed at business, lots of big processors, lots of ram and lots of hard drive (in all sorts of differing configurations).

I am not a big fan of Dell Laptops but the workstations are pretty solid. Anything from IBM would cost 3x more.

I would recommend a HP ML 110 or a ML 150. The difference is the ml 150 will take more hard drives and they are hot swappable. Go with the SATA drives, get at least 1gb RAM go for 2 if you can swing it.
Also go with Microsoft small business server software, comes with exchange for email and also remote web based access built right in.

Also don't forget some form of backup, I would go with external harddrive.

Get a basic Dell Poweredge Server with Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard Edition. SAS or SATA drives in a RAID5 Array , 2 gb RAM , single Xeon or CoreDuo Processor, Trend Client Server Messaging Suite for Small Business, a means of backup (USB External Drive, Dell RD-1000 or DAT-Tape)

You will need someone who knows wha they are doing to configure it but after that it is very stable.

Contrary to popular belief, servers do not have to be the biggest, fastest machines in the house. If you don't see a need to grow much past 5 users, host your own website and manage your own e-mail. A Windows XP professional PC will do nicely. You don't need theadded cost of Windows server. You can even enable security to protect user directories. A hard drive can never be too big in a server and you can never have too much RAM but servers typically loaf along most of the time simply serving up files and managing print jobs. If you plan on growing get a real server and learn how to use it to your advantage but if you're planning on staying at less that 10 users a Windows XP server plenty of horsepower.
