Default Gulf Crossing Tomorrow

Okay, looks like the time has come to point the old Hatt towards the Volunteer state. I've looked at my options to repair my one winged 58 and have decided to run her home on one engine. I just can't risk staying around with no insurance, and no doubt my checkbook is a little on the thin side for a $30K rebuild right now. Yep, sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not a rich man.

It's probably going to cost be better than $6K in fuel alone to get her back home. With all this in mind, will somebody PLEASE buy this dang boat so I can just get on a plane and go home?

I have a good friend and fellow Hatt owner who has volunteered to make the trip as far as Mobile. We'll be leaving Clearwater and headed to Appalachicola where we'll pick up the ICW for the run to Mobile. After that, I'm on my own. In the event we don't make it to the other side, please say something nice about me at my Viking funeral, even if you have to make something up!

Man don't I know it, we've had some big 'uns here in Winter Haven and on the coast as well. I saw about 8-10 wrecks on the way back from the boat when a big one came in.

I can see them coming on radar, but on one engine at around 8-9 mph, there's not much I can do about them other than to batten things down. Problem is, my electronics are on the bridge, but I can mark a heading and drive from below when things get rough. Those things usually move in and out pretty fast.

Heck, I ain't skeered. You have to be smart to be skeered!

Thanks L~, at least I know where I'd end up after the funeral, which is more than I can say about the boat trip!

Have a safe crossing. We had a massive blast of a storm here this afternoon. From MIAMI North. Heard it will happen again tomorrow afternoon. Check your radar before heading out it could get ugly. K

Thanks K, my radar is only 40 miles, but I'll be sure to check the weather channel in the morning and listen to the VHF before leaving the dock.

Maybe we'll get lucky and hook up with another boat headed the same way. If we REALLY get lucky, the 100ft+ Broward at the end of the dock will be headed that way and offer us a tow. There's bound to be some Grey Poupon on that one for sure!

Yoose gize talkin' to me?

Hey RJ, I'll lop the head off my kids rocking horse and send to it you to sleep with while you're in NC. It will probably be the only head you get while you're over there.

Whack him Welder!

"Yep, looks like suicide with three shots to the head with a pump shotgun found by the body." (That would fly in Roane County!)

Thanks for the links there jellodude.

I looked at the NOAA site this morning and everything looks okay. Looks like we're just about ready to hit the road, so this may be my last post for a while. No internet on the Gulf, and I'm not sure if we'll be able to get any weather on the VHF that far out. Once you're committed and offshore, it really doesn't matter as you're just going to have to ride out whatever comes your way.

My mechanic is supposed to come down in a bit and make an adjustment to the governor on my one good engine, and that should have everything up to snuff for the trip. We're looking at about a 22-24 hour run to the other side, so needless to say it's gonna be a loong ride with nothing to see but water.

Seizure later.

8-9 mph crossing..............Definatly put out at least 2 high-speed lures. It will give you something to watch for the long trip. With any luck, you will make it across and have a few Wahoo steaks to show for it, albeit at $100 a pound!

Safe voyage.

Pick up some rafters along the way. You'll have all the company you want and you can dance the Marenghi on the deck of your BIG BOAT.
