Default How Close Have You Slept To The Ocean

The duplex we rented last week on Topsail Island in NC was not only oceanfront, it was in the dang ocean! Short of sleeping on a boat, that was by far the closest I had every slept on the ocean (for any length of time!).

When we checked in, the tide was out and there was a pretty wide section of beach. Later that evening when we walked out onto the deck, the tide had come in UNDER THE DECK!

When night came and it got a little late, my buddy's wife went to bed upstairs. A little while later, she yelled down and asked what the hell we were doing as she could feel the house move! Then my wife spoke up and said she didn't want to say anything earlier, but she had felt the house moving as well!

During our last night there, the wind kicked up a bit, and what used to be a simple step from the concrete pad under the house to the beach was now an 18" drop which revealed huge sandbags that were not visible the day before! You could even see where they had jacked the pilings up from a previous storm!

There were several houses just down the street with big condemned signs on them despite the fact they were newer homes. Looks like Mother Ocean is proving once again who's in charge, and the folks who bought the cheaper lots across the street are looking pretty good in another year or two!

I've passed out on the beach and been awakened by the waves, I was much younger then.

On boats at Catalina Island, tanner and Cortez banks and the salton sea.

Granny and Gramps lived in Imperial Beach Ca. 2 blocks from the pier and sleeping at their house every weekend was a TREAT , windows open and hearing the breakers on the beach, slept like a baby.

THANKS for the memories.

Ocean Isle Beach has a similar problem. Many homes on the east end of the island had to be condemned and razed account of erosion. The sand leaving the east end is being deposited on the growing beaches of the west end.

Ditto. Slept half in, half out of the ocean...when I was younger, of course.

Above it, in it, on it, and under it.

not countin many nights aboard i lived in a garage on a cliff over the pacific for 2 years (surfed almost every day) then moved up to a real house on a bigger cliff about ten miles down the coast......my opinion is that living right on the ocean has certain drawbacks.....its wet

Default Sleeping on the ocean is wonderful~

Since i built the good skiff back in '91, i have spent over 700 nights anchored in blissful desolation at the most remote places off the Southern California coast.

I quit doing day trips years ago. It is so nice to spend 2-3 nights on the water. You miss the afternoon winds on the run home.

Besides, the nights on the water are magical~

Hitch-hiked to Florida for spring break many moons ago....
We put our sleeping bags out on the beach - didn't know much about tides then...
You can guess how we were awaken...

Randal, it looks like you are now located in NY. I would be very interested in knowing what the differences are btwn the two coasts. I know that one major diference is, CA has all of these incredible islands that make great destinations for multi-day trips.

I'd really like to know what a typicla multi-day trip out of NY would be like..

skiff....i live on the very easten end of long island.......the biggest difference (for boating) between here and santa barbara where i lived for 5 years is the amazing diversity of navigable water...ocean, bays, harbors, the LI sound........the ocean runs the south side of the island for 120 miles.....almost all sandy beach with a few miles of cliffed rocky coves just before montauk.......the island splits into two forks with 3 islands between them....gardiners island is the oldest private landholding in America, still owned by the original family (land in my signature).....once you leave the forks you are in the block island sound and block island is only about 15 miles away to the east...there are a bunch of islands that follow the line of the north fork ending in fishers island...nantucket and marthas vinyard are all within an easy days run... there are a bunch of islands off the mainland coast... way too many to list but a very popular one is cuttyhunk........the coastline is far more irregular than the west coast...i live on a penninsula with harbors to the west, north, and east and the ocean to the south...the bay to the north...if you are into offshore fishing the canyons are far enough to make two or three day trips an option....the truth is there is an amazing amount of destinations within a day of my house.........as an example a friend and i ran home from new hampshire..... in a day..........kind of confusing .......i dont have your verbal skills...maybe someone will post a chart
