Default Lawn Tractor Deck removal

I like my Craftsman DYS 4500 but to get the deck off I have to unbolt this cable retaining bracket that looks like its designed to have the cable slide up and out. The manual says all ya gotta do is unclip the clutch spring from the idle arm . Well even after doing that I can't slide this cable up out of the bracket so I have been taking the whole bracket down - And another question, then where are you supposed to hide the cable?? - I have been tucking the spring end in under the hood.....

Interesting Bob, I'll have to keep an eye on this one. My 5500 will be delivered on the 24 and I suspect I should be faced with the same challenges as you currently are.

Just curious Bob, why are you trying to remove your mowing deck now - practice? Hey I bought the 48" snow blower attachment and snow cab for my Craftsman....I can't wait to make short order of snow removal this winter!

Hi Garett

I take the deck off almost everytime I mow because I also use the tractor to haul stuff in the back woods and my trails do not have the right clearance for the deck.

My last one had an electric switch for the blades so there was no cable - the belt just had to be removed. If you get the higher end versions maybe you won't have the cable either....

Did you move in yet?

To my understanding mine comes with electric engagement.......so ?

Our home's contents moving date is one week today - July 18th and I've made special arrangements to move the content of my shop on the 19th. Won't be long now.

So, you have no cable to detach. All of the engagement mechanism is on the tractor.

Now get back to packing....

You won't even have to unplug anything. The electric engagement is definitely a plus.

Just take the appropriate hanging hardware off - it takes about 1 minute. All held on with clips.

What's a snow blower?

I actually saw one once.

To answer your question, after you pull the pin you just slide the barrel part out until just the cable is in the bracket and then lift the cable out through that verticle slot in the bracket. Then unhook the cable (or spring depending on design), from the idler bracket.

I don't know what you do with the cable then, maybe wire tie it to something?

I just wish my deck didn't weigh 500Lbs... It's a bear to take off the machine (and no, I am no exagerating, it's 500Lbs)

Jack-ass - but at least we up here don't have to deal with the Fenchies, their attitude and their garbage in the winter months! I guess we all have our vises don't we. I can use a snow blower to remove my problem, what do you use?

BTW

That Sears snowblower attachment (unless they changed it) is a single stage unit and them blades turn at some small mulitple of engine rpms. It''ll pulverize anyhting in its way including cats (trust me) and will throw rocks hundreds of feet. Make sure no one is around when you are using it.

So the write up says Bob, it's a 2 stage blower. The couple of salesmen I was talking to at Sears described it's snow blowing abilities much the same way you have. Snow Blower Attachment
