Default VOiP

Anyone out there using one of the many Voice over IP services out there. Have some friends that used Vonage and have had good luck, but all the online reviews seem to really hammer it. I know that most people who are satisfied won't review it so I just wanted to get a feel from others out there. I am also concerned about the difficulty of setting it up with my current Airport Extreme Base Station network in my house. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mark

I use Vonnage and it works well. Not perfect but very well. I also use a Llynksys home network and it was very easy to install. The problem with Vonnage is they have been sued by Verizon for patent infringement and verizon won the suit. This can potential put Vonnage out of business, be sold to anothe rvOIP company or Vonnage customers may only be able to call other Vonnage customers.

All in All - well worth the price. I use my cell phone most of the time anyway which is why I signed up for Vonnage.

PS I had better luck with Vonnage using the Wireless G router. I had a old wireless B but it seemed to go down more. The Wirelss G has not gone down yet.

Good Luck

It's not quite the same thing as what you're asking, but my coworkers and I all talk through Skype because we're spread out all over the country. Some of them have the phone service like you're asking about, but I just use a headset connected to the computer. The voice quality is superior to a regular phone.

I have not used skype but friends have and they love it! I use vonage at work and as long as you have a fast/reliable DSL connection you will not have any issues.

Skype works awesome, and it's cheap. You don't have to buy any hardware, either. It works with most newer laptops if they have a mic and speakers built in. Otherwise, you can spend $40 for a mic or headset. The only downside is that currently it doesn't display your number when you call someone. That's going to be fixed soon, they fixed it in other countries.

SunRocket for two years now...no problems about $15 a month and very clear. Lots of cool features linking your calls to e-mail and being able to customize caller IDs.

We've been using Vonage for awhile now. So far so good. Easy to setup, nice online interface, and sounds good. For the money I would recommend them.

Vonage injected reality into VoIP, did for VoIP what Apple did for MP3 players. But SkyPE cleaned it up, made it better, and it’s free. The newer technology developed by SkyPE runs circles around the quality of audio used by the older Vonage technology. Saw some investors talking about it on Fox News; SkyPE is burying Vonage for casual users.

Just hear on the news that 1 in 8 houses in the US is now wireless; i.e. those homes have canceled their land line connection and depend completely on wireless for phone and internet.

I am looking at upgrading our home alarm system. The new stuff has a cell phone built into the alarm panel to call into the central station in the event of an alarm. No more land lines needed for home alarms, either.

Looks like the aluminum foil hat is lined up to make a comeback.

Yup, Vonage works for me for $19 a month (was 16 before the feds added taxes and 911 fees) for 500 minutes which we never go over since the cells are primary. If my cable goes down my number rings to my cell, so no problems.

Just hope they stay in business, but if not I'll probably ditch the home phone.

SunRocket has gone out of business. I just talked to a former employee that said everyone was laid off last Friday.

I had Vonage for 3+ years. I had very few problems with it, and most of them were related to a dirty internet connection where I lived for about 8 months. I swithed to Cavelier Telephone because I have and alarm on my house and wanted a landline. If it weren't for that I would still have Vonage.
