Default Wi Fi Access??

Getting ready to head on vacation this week and would like to take my laptop and check in on email, THT, charlestonfhing, and other things but have never tried the wireless access outside of my home.

I see places that advertise wi fi but really not sure how it works and how to access it.

Would like some tips and also how "safe" is it to check bank accounts and such as well??

never really that paranoid about that stuff - but usually if you're in a starbucks or hotel, you'll fire up your browser and it will be interuppted by a sign on site that may or may not charge you by day/month.

minimize that and start another browser session and you're on...

Pretty easy stuff. I pick up WiFi in airports by simply making sure my wireless is on. Then opening up browser. Sometimes you need to register and pay to connect like with Tmobile. Some (few) airports are free. I am overseas right now on a high speed cable connection at a hotel at about 23 USD/day. Normally the systems step you through it when you open your browser. It is pretty easy these days.

A little off the subject but one thing I can't understand. I can stay at a $44 per nite Days Inn and get free wireless. Then we stay at a freaking Hilton or Embassy for 3-4 times that and they want to charge $9.99 per day.

tprice, they make a little thingy that has LED lights on it. You can turn it on and check for wireless signals without having to fire up the laptop.

I was just having that same conversation with a colleague today! It really doesn't make much sense. I am in a Crown Plaza and it is close to 24 dollars today. Granted the exchange rate sucks but still.

If you have a laptop with wireless capabilities, just figure out how to search for an unsecured network and it's free. They're everywhere.

Thanks for all the help, we keep thinking of installing internet at our house on IOP and may get around to that this winter.

Some people that rent ask us if we have it so we may need to go ahead with the installation

What kind of computer are you using?

I have an Acer Aspire 5100. It automatically looked for WiFi nets until I changed the settings to wait until asked. Either way, there's a slider tab in front to enable/disable WiFi functinality.

The place I am staying this week has WiFi but it's pretty crummy. I guess we are too far from the base station. After looking through the literature it turns out we are in the 'new' building and it has broad-band. I got every possible cable you could need when I bought this machine so I Just plugged it in and "Voila!"

The list of available networks cme up the same way as at home and I found 3 of my neighbors have open networks inrange of my house. Lucky for them I have DSL or I'd have cancelled my dial-up and mooched of them.

The resort does advise they arent responsible for security but I always run with installed security so I am not worrying any more than at home.

My only regret is I dont have a tow vehicle this year and our 'big' lake is 10 miles from here! lol

I have friends in NYC that whenever they need an internet connection they go into any skyscraper building downtown and turn on their laptops and wonder the halls until they find an unsecure wi-fi net. They say it only takes a couple of minute in any building to find one.

FYI to those who buy wireless transmitters.

Not securing your net allows other folks to piggyback on your equipment. This can slow down your use of your system. Depending on your moral center you can argue that it's theft the same as hacking into your home phone for local calls or, that you are extending an invitation like leaving a door open.

Less likely but scary is that if the non-authorised user enages in illegal net activity (perverts etc..) The internet trace ends at your door. You'll likely get out of when your machines are clean but it is a hassle and could be very embarassing.

Just a thought from a guy with an over active imagination.

There is a growing practice in California where folks with high band-width wi-fi post a sign in their window that this is a hot spot and they put a bench outside for folks to sit on. The thought is something like I am paying for x amount of bandwidth and I canít use it all so I might as well give away what I can to someone that can use it. There is no way it could reasonable be considered theft.

Iíve thought about the illegal activities angle, too. Thatís why I only surf porn in the lounge at the airport.

Did you see the story in the Miami Herald about the realtor who posted ads on Craigslist inviting clients to call a competitor of his for sex? Poor lady was being harassed day and night.

He posted 20 some ads...some were traced to IP addresses from his house...others were traced to public IPs...or IPs where he camped onto someone else's signal.

Call me paranoid but my home network is locked down....unless your MAC address is loaded by me into the router, you can't connect. Keeps anyone unauthorized from using my connection.....
