I have been looking at this camera for a couple of weeks and was on the verge of buying it when I heard of the Leica Vlux-1.
Leica is legendary in photography. Check this via a google search. I found one at less than $600, at least comparable to the Nikon, if not better. No, I have no interest in Leica, and in fact usually shy away from anything German (cars especially) but Leica is in a class by itself.

Leica main focus is on lenses and you can buy many brands with Lecia lenses - Panasonic for example.

Leica’s legendary camera quality tanked when they moved their manufacturing facility to Spain. You need to hang out on some Leica forums to get the skinny on it. Leica was a phenomenal piece of engineering. Today, it just fits in the mix with the rest of them. In fact, there are a couple of cameras manufactured by Cosina in Japan (Nagano prefecture, known for its clean water and udon noodles) that I would take over a Leica without even having to think about it. One of them is the Nikon rangefinder, made by Cosina.

As Menzies points out, the Leica lens for 35mm cameras used to really stand out. To give you an idea, it had the highest resolution of any off-the-shelf lens, outperforming even medium format Hasselblad cameras with Zeiss optics made with Schott glass. The key was the German made Schott glass coupled with the Carl Zeiss engineering/manufacturing. The only companies that made those lens were Leica (Germany) and the now defunct Contax/Kyocera (Japan). After Kyocera got out of the camera business, Zeiss decided to offer their famous lens with Nikon F mounts, and then with Canon mounts. The actual manufacturing of the Japanese Zeiss optics is...you guessed it, Cosina in Japan.

I have/use the Japanese-made Zeiss ZF lenses (Nikon mount) on both a digital Nikon D2Xs and a film Nikon FM3a body. The lenses are made in Japan on machines imported from Zeiss in Germany, made to German specification by Japanese labor. The manf’ing is overseen by German engineers, and the final QA’d is also by German engineers. The lenses ain’t cheap and I ain’t parting with them for anything!

RickO – I have looked at the N40 and the newest N40x. Nice little camera, the new “x” version. It seems to be a miniaturized version of the N80, less the auto-bracketing functions and a scaled back focusing zone system, if I recall correctly. A friend was looking to buy the N80 and I strongly encouraged her toward the New N40x, has the same mega-pixel count as the N80. It is lighter and smaller, better for traveling. The N40 is NOT THE SAME as the newer N40x.

Everything worth knowing about digital photography can be found on this website:

And fwiw, the N40x is now available from Costco with I-forget-what Nikon lens in a kit.

I have a feeling that with the development of sophisticated computer design, all lenses are better now than the were when I bought my Nikkormat and Nikkor lenses 30 years ago.

I have gotten away from the latest and greatest new gadgets..I just want stuff to work for a change. Comparing old Leicas is like saying Duesenbergs were fantastic cars..for their technological time, yes. In todays new technology...I dunno.

I went with the Canon 10 megapixel rebel because I had the lenses to fit the body. At 10 megapixels, the pictures will be great regardless, just get the camera that suits you best.

Eyeball: Thanks for the informative post. I learn something from these forums everyday. Having been out of photography for a number of years, I just haven't kept up. In my day Leica was the standard everyone shot for. Guess they have gone the way of so many other products. My interes in photo has recently bee rekindled, and I will re-look the Nikons. Thanks.

In my day Leica was the standard everyone shot for. Guess they have gone the way of so many other fine products. My interest in photo has recently been rekindled, and I will re-look the Nikons, as I have not yet made the purchase. Thanks.
