Default LCD Digital Televisions Question?

My wife wants a 26 to 32" HDTV for the bedroom. I been looking around at the Circuit City, Best Buy, Sears and Walmart and really am at a loss for what brand to buy. I'm trying to spend between $500 and $900 (the lower the better) and have been looking at the following brands: Vizio, Sanyo (sp?), RCA, Samsung, Phillips and even Poloriod (I thought they were camera-people?). The highest priced sets were made by Samsung and the lowest by RCA and Vizio.

Of these brands, is there one to stay away from? Is one of these the Chrysler outboard engine? The Vizio looks to have a great picture and at a cheap price but is cheap price = poor quality?

Any feedback would be much appriciated.

Chris

Sanyo is one I have heard good things about lately. My parents just got one at Wally World and its pretty sharp. Make sure you are getting one that has the HD tuner built in, not just an HD "ready" TV. We bought the 32" Sony and really like it but some say we could have done better for less money.

Samsung makes most of the LCD pannels that other brands use.. Cheaper brands that use Samsung pannels are using thier lower quality pannels.

But even a lower quality LCD still looks great

your cheaper brands sanyo, vizio, magnavox, polaroid, the list goes on will be the cheapest, they will be thicker than your top tier brands like sony, lg, samsung, jvc, etc the pciker quality won't be as good even if they "spec" the same, in that price range you will be able to get almost all brands except (32")sony
samsung(partnered with sony) makes along of panel as does lg(partnered with phillips) lg gives better support than samsung
the vizio is one of the least expensive,b/c of buying lower grade panels and no service if it breaks out of warranty throw away, thats what wally world wants you to do
spend a few extra bucks and get a better picture jvc lt32e448 is a good 32" under 900 on sale or toshiba 32" lg 32lc7d
rca is chinese company now with rca name, bad repair rate

Blues,

Actually RCA is French (I would rather it be Chinese) but I must say my RCA 3 CRT Rear Projection set has been flawless and I've had my 61" Projection long before most people bought "big" TV's I can attribute it to luck though, because RCA really is junk anymore

I love my Sharp Aquos LCD (on the boat) great for watching movies when I am on the water! And yep LG is the other biggie in LCD pannels, though I think Samsung pretty much has the 15-19" market covered (PC Displays) and LG has the small market covered.

Costco's Vizio I think are actually made in America now. I think most other vizio's are made in China. I think because of the US made status quality may have improved a bit.

Samsung always get high marks. RCA as well unless you buy it from Radio shack. Don't ever buy RCA from radio shack. It's RCA in name only. Most of the other are about the same I think in quality.

The only one i've ever read negative reviews on is westinghouse.

I've got a 40 Samsung as our main TV and love it. Picture is amazing. Just last week, we bought a Vizio 32 for the bedroom. I didn't feel the need to spend a premium on a "second" TV. Sears had a nice price on the Vizio and I spent some time researching it. CNET.com likes the Vizio quite a bit and they are generally very hard on TV's in the reviews. My understanding is also that Vizio is linked with LG, so at least you have a larger company behind it all. So far, I'm satisfied with the Vizio. The picture isn't as good as our Samsung, but it also cost nearly a third of the price. Either way, it's still a good looking and nice performing TV.

I've read there are 4 LCD manufacturers... LG, Sanyo, Samsung, and some other company. Don't bother trying to decide which one to buy based on the "picture" you see at the store. Those signal are split a crazy amount of times. Plus, all of the color settings are set to default which in most cases is off. The only real way to get a proper picture is using to calibrate your image. I went through this with my bedroom LCD. I ended up getting a Westinghouse 32". I went to a AV forum and read what settings people use after their calibration and with those settings, the picture rivals any double the price Sony or Sharp. My coworker bought a Visio and did the same. He wasn't impressed with it at the store, but after hooking it up at home, and tweaking the settings, he loves it.

Another vote for the Sharp Aquos here. Go to digital1234.com for a good deal on one.

2nd place vote would be for Samsung and Toshiba.

I sat in my dentist office this morning looking at all of his 2 year old cheap lcd tvs' which are clearly showing the poor quality - crappy picture quality is an understatement! He should have spent a few extra bucks and he'd still have great flat panel displays hanging on the wall.

vizio is by far the best value out there right now...i have a 37" and it's awesome. maybe not the absolute best, but it's a hundred times better than the older analog tube that i replaced. try not to get so wrapped up in too many features and resolution...especially in a unit of that size. just make sure you get the model with hdmi connections...it simplifies your set-up and improves the picture quality from your cable box and dvd-player when they're sending a digital signal.

my understanding is that a large percentage of the parts in the vizio units are the same as sony. for a while they were even built in the same factory. the sonys may have some bells and whistles and a little more bling, but it's hardly worth almost twice the price.

my friend has had two vizios that are now two years old...no problems to report.

I have a Vizio 32" and couldn't be happier with it. Pure, crisp images and an awesome picture. I have heard many positive comments on the Sharp also. I would add that signal delivery will also affect quality. Not all cable systems are the same, and same goes for sat TV, FIOS, etc.

I'm thinking the same thing .... Vizio is not as good as a Sony or Samsung but a Vizio is also 50% less in cost. And since this is to be a 2nd TV (not the primary TV), I'm willing to purchase a "mid-tier TV" and save some $$. I think I got my answer when many of you said "I have a Vizio and it's a fine TV".

Thanks-
Chris
