Default Vacation in the Arkansas Ozarks?

We're thinking of spending a few days in NW Arkansas the few days after July 4th. We've never been anywhere near the area before, but would like to check it out.

Can anyone recommend a good location to stay that will allow us to drive around and see a lot of sites, hiking, views, etc?

Will it be too crowded during 4th of July weekend to enjoy ourselves?

Any hints/tips/thoughts are welcome!

Thanks

Mark

You could try eureka springs. It's a smaller town, kind of built on the side of the mountains, lots of shops. I don't think it will be to bad after the 4th.I'll try and think of a few more places. If you don't mind driving a little farther east to near central arkanas you could take a float trip down the buffalo river.

I spent a week at Gaston's Resort on the White River last summer and thoroughly enjoyed every minute......

I second eureka springs.

I think the town has a website - lots of small shops - crafty type stuff - couple really good resturaunts (haven't been in a couple years) - haunted hotel - lots of bed and breakfasts places - and lesbians.

The admiral and I have always enjoyed Big Cedar Lodge in North Ark. Top notch service and only 1 hour from the orginal Bass Pro Shop in Springfield Missouri. It sits in Table Rock Lake and has boat rentals, everything from a party barge to the vintage wooden runabouts with inboards. Excedllent food and service

I would second Eureka Springs or Branson, Mo is you like the tourist type areas. As far as areas to see, floating the Buffalo R. is really fun and beautiful. The Elk R in SW Mo is slightly less crowded, but still very nice. Also, Natural Falls state park in Oklahoma is worth the trip. It is just across the state line on 412 through Siloam Springs, Ar.
